Grill danger

steel that is brass plated

I heard a guy from a brush company explain that those bristles come from wire rejected for use in steel belted tires, so it's very cheap for them to turn around and make brushes from them. You'll also see them used in cheap wire wheels...

Their being brittle makes sense otherwise I bet they'd already be in a tire.

Danger of grill brushes identified

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 11:28 AM PDT

Physicians have identified a number of cases of accidental ingestion of wire grill brush bristles that required endoscopic or surgical removal.

Lets be careful when brushing the goop off the grill as metal bristles might stick to grill and end up in your throat or worse.

That's news to me--but I can see it happening.

There's a much more serious grill danger (I'm talking charcoal grills)--namely getting tiny bit of hot coal in the eye. One of my co-workers had this happen to her husband who was handling the grilling job at a weekend patio party. Partial loss of vision in that eye. Whenever I fire up my grill I wear eye protection.

Cheap wire in a wire wheel is plenty dangerous too. It's bad enough with good wire. Drove one through the pad of my thumb so the tip stuck through the nail when I was a pup. Decades ago, so likely US made. Those crimped wires sure come out painful!
