Grinding noise when coming to stop

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday while mowing i was going forward up a hill (small incline) and missed a patch of grass. I rolled backwards, to go over patch with tractor and as i was coming to a stop i heard what sounded like gears grinding. Clutch was in and PTO was engaged. It sounded "larger" then transmission gears, hard to explain that sound.....
After i finished cutting the grass i was able to reproduce the noise every time now. Roll backwards and press break down to stop and noise happens. It happens when i press the brake and not while rolling only when coming to a stop.

Sounds like brake problems, we keep Foton parts if you need any, you will have to get into it to see whats going on

Well, the Fotons have wet brakes. That means they're inside the differential housing. The only thing exposed are the external linkages to the brake pedals. Wet brakes are not subject to dirt and rust problems as are dry brakes, hence there are very seldom any wet brake problems reported

I suggest that you start by trying one brake at a time. Release the locking mechanism that binds the two brake pedals together. See if it's only one side making the noise - or both.

//Greg//, the Foton FT404 do not have wet brakes that I have seen,they are similier to the Jinmas disc dry brakes ??? Not sure where you seen wet brakes at? Was it on a FT404 ?

Not sure where you seen wet brakes at? Was it on a FT404 ?

Yes, although I can't say whether any of them were 2005 models

Thanks for replies.
Greg i did as you asked and it is only on drivers side, if there is such a thing on a tractor, LOL.

I also notice now that it "sticks" when i try to drive forwward. It "pops" or "clunks" and then it drives fine. It feels like the brakes are getting stuck. Anymore thoughts?

Brakes are inside housing so i will have to have it taken somewhere to fix them......

Yeah, if they were dry brakes you'd be able to access them externally. Wet brakes are pretty simple, just basic metal on metal disc brakes essentially submerged in gear oil. Parts should be pretty cheap, but labor will really suck

I am going to load the tractor up on sunday and take it to mechanic and see what he can do for me. I will let you guys know what he comes up with. Thanks for all your help

Before you do that. Have you tried to adjust the breaks? Should be two threaded linkages from the break pedal?

I have had they same sounds when new. I just adjusted it to get the correct free travel and now it has been fine for 150 hours.

I have a Mahindra 2525 with wet disc breaks.

Hello everyone,

Ok went by the mechanics place last night on way home. couple things:

first the rear end oil was dark blood red, had a weird smell to it. Kind of sweat and sour at same time....

found some metal on magnetized oil plug...bunch of shavings

also found a round piece of metal on magnet, (best description is a paper clip bent into a circle, not that big as a paper clip but it gives the idea)


not looking good for home team, just wanted to give update.
(brakes were already adjusted almost all the way for last post comment, thx for idea though)
