Grinding noise when coming to stop

Any chance someone unknowingly or unwittingly added ATF instead of the prescribed 80W90 gear oil?

And given your statement that "brakes were already adjusted almost all the way", you may have inadvertently over-tightened those linkages. When that happens, you're actually driving/working with the brakes on. It's like riding the brakes, even though your foot's nowhere near the pedal. That can cause premature wear and/or damage even to wet brakes. Hot brakes submerged in gear oil could do funny things, such as discoloration and smell. The parts found suggest a retaining clip/snap ring let go somewhere, but there are literally dozens of them in there.

Hi Greg,

I bought the tractor used, so honestly i have no idea about someone putting wrong oil in there. I would check levels before use and have not had to add any, no telling before i had it. when i would check levels it never looked like that on dip stick.

The "riding the brakes" idea may explain why it feels sluggish since the adjustment of them(thinking back on it).......i am a idiot!!!!

He is going to be taking the rear end apart today so we shall see. I am betting brakes are shot!!

Stopped by to check on progress........WOW does it look different completely apart like that, poor tractor!!!

Ok, so pads are in excellent shape, shocked but very happy!!

Sounds and looks like since different rear end oil(and not correct oil) was in there and with that, causing no lubrication is probably all the "noise" and sticking of brakes. Lots of metal shavings and RUST was found also.

They are going to be putting it all back together fill it, run it and drain it and fill it again. does that Sound good???? I mean there is no filter other than that magnet so i cant think of any other way to "flush it"

Also i did not know that the hydraulics and rear end were on separate lubricants. What i gather is my hydraulics are on top of rear end and separated completely. So what i thought i have been checking my levels on rear end was just my hydraulics and not rear end at all .......

You really need to get the manuals for that tractor! They would have told you how much and what type of fluid goes where, among a jillion other things you need to know to be a successful tractor owner.

Hi Rich,
I just got my hands on them the other day, i did some calling around and found a place that would just give them to me. I turned them over to my mechanic so he can try and make heads or tails out of it. Making progress

I thought i was doing the right thing but some reading material would have been nice from the word go.....i know its my fault stop yelling at me, LOL!!! (j/k, i know what you mean)
