My 10-year-old son and I went to breakfast last Saturday at the local Shoney's breakfast buffet. It is located right off I-75 in Forsyth Ga. It attracts a lot of northern folks on the way to and from wherever they happen to be travelling. On nearly every visit, especially on Saturday's, I overhear a conversation in midwestern or northeastern dialect about grits. Grits seem to fascinate northerners for some reason. Gets me tickled listening to the various comments about "those southern people" and their grits.

I was in a Waffle House off I-75 (there's that I-75 connection again.) and a guy from Michigan asked me where grits came from. I told him they were harvested from the nuts of the prolific southern grits tree and ground up like corn meal in grits mills. His girlfriend actually believed me. I think he did too. I wonder if they took my advice and stopped in TyTy Georgia to visit the grits orchard?

So I'd like to take this opportunity to answer any questions you northern folk have about grits and invite y'all down to visit one of our vast grit plantations and take a tractor tour of the grits orchards and see the packaging operation as the grits are processed through the grits mill. It will be a highly educational experience that will show you how to expertly differentiate your grits from your granola. We can set an example to the world that both northern and southern TBN'ers can co-exist in "hominy".

I used grits to wallpaper the dining room, however the wall paper came down during humid weather. What did I do wrong????? Too much water or not enough grits????? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Grits remind me of the texture that liquid sandpaper might have. Never found a good use for the stuff myself.

Many non-southerners do not understand the real purpose of grits. They mistakenly think they are an actual food item. In truth, grits are nothing more than a medium or vehicle, if you will, to aid in the ingestion of large quantities of melted butter, salt and pepper.

Grits is corn that should go through the pig first and then be eaten as a 'poke chop'. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But, it goes down well with a few sunnyside up egges nestled in a plate full of it with 4-5 strips of greasy bacon on the side, and a few pieces of thickly buttered corn bread. Wash it down with some fresh, real buttermilk and get one small 'burp' and a big smile.

Too hot to live down south, but if you want to bring that food to the North, I'd eat it sho nuff.

PS We Northerners from the Midwest should stop going south and teasing the locals like that, letting them think we don't know what that white stuff is, and asking leading questions, and going along with the wierd answers. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Junkman,

You used too much butter, causing the grits to slide down the wall in high humidity conditions. Next time, add a little sugar or honey to the grits. This will give the desired adhesive effect.

I love grits but haven't had any good grits since I left Savannah in 1977.

It wouldn't be cornbread for breakfast. Biscuits are the only bread other than pancakes that can be eaten before noon (which is dinner time by the way) Supper would include corn bread. It goes with our soup beans (pintos, navy, etc.. not great Northern as many still believe that is an oxymoron).

Grits weren't meant to be instant either. They should be cooked. A microwave does not do them justice. Supper grits can have a variation of aditives such as cheese etc...

I heard that the grits trees were found in the same orchards as the hominy trees! I'm going to be sure I use Ty Ty Georgia with future directions I give. I only wish I had thought of it.

Grits (hominy), Cream of Wheat, Cream of Rice ... they are all similar cereals. I grew up in the Chicago-area and ate them all while growing up. I guess I didn't realize so many northerners were amazed and fasinated by grits.
