I encountered the same situation when I bought my land. I disced, plowed, used a drag, and then finished with a box blade. This has worked well for me, and I am in the process of doing it now on 8 acres of land I take care of next to my house.

When I bought my land I had about 4 acres that had large ridges and pot holes. It was so rough that even cutting it up and down and trying to follow the pattern of the land would still shake your teeth. I had just purchased my tractor and did not have any implements. A local guy said he could disc it up and drag it and make it smooth as a skating rink for for 500 to 1000. I just wanted to cut grass and keep all my teeth.

Well to make a long story short , After 3 days I finally ran the guy off and ended up paying him a 1000 , he wanted more to finish the job.

I bought a box blade and finished it myself. It is not perfect by any means but I have a 6 foot finishing mower and I can fly over it in no time and that is what I wanted.

So basically I got took. But the one thing I learned is it is just dirt. If you make a mess just fill in the hole and try it again.
