ground plow

Hi all!,
I have a JD 3320 (33 hp.) and I want to get a ground plow.The plow I have in mind is a 16" 2 bottom Ferguson. My question is does my tractor have enough h.p. to handle a plow of that size? Thanks.

Yes.
Rule of thumb is 12-15 hp per bottom. Depends, too, on the ground - heavy clay/light sand - and size of bottoms- 12, 14, 16".
But you should be ok.

You should be OK. I have a 29hp Kubota, and I bought a 2bottom Dearborn a few months ago. My soil is sandy, and I've discovered that in some places I can bog down if the plow is set too deep. I just lift it a little bit and keep going.

Back when I was a young lad, dad had a 32 HP Massey Ferguson 50. (Yeah, yeah....I know, when I was young they hadn't even invented dirt yet, muchless a plow /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) We pulled 2X12" plows with it. In some ground, that's all the old MF wanted. Of course, we have clay that's like concrete at times.

One issue would be WEIGHT. That old Massey hit the scales at 4300LBS, ballasted and field ready. It would do some serious spinning if conditions weren't just right.

It's hard to compare tractors of yesteryear against today. One thing is, those old tractors were designed to pull a plow. Even utility tractors back then were counted on to be pulling a plow. Todays tractors are designed with about everything EXCEPT heavy tillage in mind.

Also, consider what tires you are running. R-1's are OK, but AG tires work BETTER for plowing.
