My first Kohler here I have a slt 1550 and its nickname is ""gas hog"""

this new one uses @ least 2 to 3 times more gas than my old mower white with 16 hp briggs in it

Yea, my 2554 replaced an L-12 White that had a 12 HP Briggs. It used a lot less fuel. Of course this tractor with the Kohler doesn't suck a pint of oil every 2 or 3 hours either. And it even starts easily... ;)

I mow about 2 to 3 hours on 1 tank of gas. I was never concerned about how much gas it took until the prices of gas went sky high. It sure would be nice if they would put bigger gas tanks on these machines. My granddad's 212 John Deere had a 4.75 gallon tank and could mow 2 weeks on 1 tank.
I guess I am not concerned with how much I use just how much I have to pay:eek:

Nope, you can't even take a lawn mower for granted with gas prices today. Gas useage wasn't a strong concern when I replaced my original flathead Kohler KT17 with the new OHV Honda engine, but I quickly discovered the new engine uses about half the amount of gas the old one did. Saving one gallon per mowing session with gas at $3.00/gal, the new engine will save me about $60 a season on gas. So I guess over the course of the new engine's lifetime, it will pay for itself. (Had to justify it SOMEHOW LOL!)

I hear you. In my case it wasn't so much the amount used that bothered me but the low capacity. I usually mow 2-3 hours. I really wish I could get done without needing to stop for fuel. There's room where the tank is located for a larger one. They just chose not to use one.

A 4 gallon tank sounds great. More is always better IMO.

That's one reason to buy a 3000 series. My 3235 has a 4-1/2 gallon tank. I mow an acre with a lot of trimming and generally don't fill the tank until I'm ready for the third mowing.

I wanted the 3000 series but I didn't have that kind of money. I got my 2518 in 2003 for $3899 plus tax. It has the same cast iron tranny as the 3000 series and a 20 hp Kohler Command engine. I think JD even uses the 2.25 gallon gas tank in some of their machines. I can do my whole yard on one tank (2 to 3 Hours) Just some to put up with I guess!

Another thing to consider is break in. Once you start getting more hours the engine will use less fuel. I've noticed on mine that I get better fuel economy as my hours increase. When it was new, I couldn't believe how fast is sucked gas. But its been better. I have noticed that its fallen off as I have been bagging. Added weight and a little longer run times.

I would have loved to have gotten a 3000 series when I got my 2554. The $ difference just put it over what I wanted to spend. Another $1K I maybe could have justified, but the difference at the dealers in this area was about $2K. Nice tractors and worth every penny. But if I don't put semi-hard limits on my purchases pretty soon I'm up to $10K for a mower. :)

You now have me wondering if a 3000 series tank could be installed in a 2500 series tractor. There is some room under there. If the dimension between the frame rails is the same on the two tractors it makes me think it might work...

JSharp you may be onto something! I will have to call my Cub dealer and find that out. That would be sweet if it can be done.
