I want the flapper gone simply because it hangs out so far and gets in the way.

On many of the mowers it seems they make the discharge chute extra long. If it were mine I would use a cut off tool and remove about 6 inches of the chute. MAKING SURE, not to remove too much. Maybe remove a couple inches at a time until you are comfortable. If you keep about 3" or so from the edge of the deck you should be ok. A lot of people have rigged up string, bungy cord etc. to hold the chute up. I would rather not do that.
