Anyone have any commets on yanmar GT14? I know its was made for the US market, Are parts still availalbe for it? Whats a fair value for one in good condition at 595 hours?

Thanks.

Gary the GT14 is still in the Yanmar parts list, so I guess most parts are still available, but I have not ordered parts for a GT14 in several years.

Gary,

There is a local tractor dealer here that has several for sale and has one or two parts tractors. He is so high on everything that I have been scared to ask and he probably wouldn't give you the time of day anyway.

Where are you from?

I am currently restoring a GT14. I got mine very cheap, but cheap for a good reason... it was beat to death. I have found parts availability very very good. Most stuff is still available, and not really too expensive, with a few exceptions.

Problem areas appear to be the front PTO system, there were several late changes to it that only dealers know about. Gary Jamieson in PA has been very knowledgeable about that part. I'm a mechanical engineer, and started to rebuild the pto on mine, and got my butt kicked on it. If you go to buy a GT14 / YM146, make sure the PTO is in good shape, or factor some cost into your price for a rebuild. Parts for it are NOT cheap. Wear items appear to be priced higher than non-wear items. Small brackets and bolts, etc are cheap, while wear items like mower wheels are expensive. From what I've seen, the GT 14 is a well designed tractor, with a lot of nice features, except for the PTO. You get a real water pump, hydrostatic drive, electric pto, etc. Prices seem to run about $2500-3000 in decent shape. Perhaps a little more if you have the 3pt hitch or rear pto which were optional. Buy the manuals. Expensive but worth it. I can't imagine maintaining one of these without it or a knowledgable dealer nearby. I don't have a dealer near, so I had to buy manuals. Good luck.

Have you fixed your PTO problem or are you still looking? I could swing by the local dealer I mentioned earlier to see if the parts tractors still have it. Let me know; they are only a couple miles from the house, but he would probably want an arm and a leg for it. Don't know if you want to give up body parts for it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif!

Yes, it's fixed. I sent it to Gary and had him rebuild it. He seems to be the expert on that PTO. (at least based on my experience)

If you do decide to swing by the dealer, ask him what he's getting for a crankshaft for the GT14. Mine's bent, and I need
to either replace or repair it. I can get it repaired for about $150, so if he'd be higher than that, not interested.

If I were a betting man; I would bet that he wants more than that (see previous thread). I will try to get by there tomorrow and ask. My wife has filled my social calender for today /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif!

The list price for the crankshaft is $ 701.69, but I don't think it's available anymore.

$700 for a 2 cylinder crankshaft is lunacy. That's why I'll probably just have the crank repaired. Hard to justify $700 because the end is running 0.003" out.

Snuck out of work a little early yesterday and went by the dealer. Just what I was thinking. He would strip the crank out, but he would charge "around $400 - $475 to take it out and no guarantee of its condition". The parts tractor was purchased at an auction (probably paid less than that for it) and he did not know what was wrong with the tractor in the first place. While I was there; there was another guy there with a crank out of a MF and he was going to drive to Charlotte to have his repaired because they wanted too much for a OEM replacement.

Find you a good machine shop that can build it up and machine it back to spec. $150 sounds like a good price if that is what you are going to have done to yours. Good luck with your repairs.

By the way; I don't know what you paid for yours, but he has a couple there for sale and he wants $3,000 for the worst looking one there. I honostly do not know how he stays in business.

Yes, I was going to have a professional crank shop build it up and machine it back down. I gave about $850 for my GT14. It ran good, but the PTO was inoperable. I figured "how bad could it be to fix?" It's been a tough lesson to learn. If I could do it over again, I would have bought the $2500 GT14 an hour away, with implements front and rear, that already was ready to go. Then the wife could be mowing, instead of me mowing with a 35hp gas tractor and bushog and then workin on the yanmar after dark until 10:30 at night. For months. It'll be nice when it's done, but what a lot of work to save a few bucks.
I've just gotten the deck sandblasted and primed, now I'm working on the bracketry and spindles. Once that's done, I'll push it into a corner and work on the main tractor frame. It's mostly stripped now, just got to pull the engine and transaxle, then send it for sandblasting. I wasn't originally going to go this far with it, but it's pulled this far apart, might as well do it right. Sigh...

Believe me; I have been in the same position. Think you're getting a deal on something just to find out everything has to be replaced. I took a pretty good lick on a '82 camero. New motor (too much HP...so), new transmition (would handle HP...but), and new rear end. Had a decent hot rod, but eventually had to sell (lost my butt on that deal!). Sorry to ramble /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Have you ever thought about having your parts powder coated. There is a local guy here that does it pretty cheap. Is more durable and will last longer.

I don't have a good local source for powder coating.
