Guess What This Is Gonna Be

I would take the tire off of the drive wheel, and use the other tire for rope friction. You should be able to control the tension that way, also.

My Dad told tales of rigging a rope to the wheel of a Model T for this purpose, but I never got all the details of how it was connected.

I wonder if just wrapping the rope a few turns around the axle (a-la, the capstain winch idea) and then having it go through an anchored pulley or block on the downhill end might work?

Capstan is the best idea I think. Just remove the tire that the rope is on and wrap the rope around the driven tire rim. You might want to make some sort of large kill switch in case some wee little one gets curious and gets a glove or hand caught in there...

Park tractor sideways & use the PTO shaft. Attach an old bush hog, but remove the blades for safety.

Or fab up a frame (maybe an old sub-soiler frame?) to attach to your 3PH that can support the PTO shaft.

When it's time to start pulling them, you could engage the PTO slowly using the clutch.

As the ball of rope around the PTO shaft gets bigger, they'll go faster & faster up the hill ... Weeeeeeee!

Or ... use an old tiller or snow blower with the blades removed.

I have anoher rim I can put on other side of auger mount

wonder if capstan would work as there would be no pull on the backside of the rope as it returns down the hill to the pulley then I would think there would be no tension on the backside rope and therefore no friction on capstan and no pull just slipping rope?

Would be easy enough for me to try

I hole to be testing this weekend in my driveway which has some slope to it

You're right about the tension needed on the slack line. Doing it by hand might get old fast, but maybe not. It's not like you have to put a lot of tension on the line. Just offering it as an a "maybe". :)

Looks like fun!

We draw names here for Christmas, and my sister got me this year. She asked what I wanted, and I emailed her links to a couple of auctions for *lots* of old Popular Mechanics magazines from the 40's and 50's. Cost her about $20 total, and has provided me with hours of entertainment.

Here are some admittedly poor-quality webcam photos from the February 1959 issue. Drive your VW Beetle to the slope, and then put the drive axle up on a set of rollers that power up a rope tow:

(The pages aren't yellowed like they are in the photos. It must be my poor lighting next to the computer desk.;))

There are quite a few YouTube clips with homemade rope tows as well...here's one example:

I love stuff like this...

brokenot, that U-tube unit was darn amazing! Looks like it could provide a lot of fun if you didn't have hills close by for the kids to slide down, not to mention a great little ski-lift unit!
