Yeah, not the best advertisement for the state, but in reality, if you stay out of their domain, you don't see them very often.

What about all the stories I read about alligators in backyard pools, pools/waterways in parks, etc?

Same problem up north with moose and people or animals in general and people.

Moose tend to avoid humans, bears are more of a problem in that regard. People (and not just tourists ) either think they're cute and try to feed them, or don't think and leave bird feeders or food scraps outside and attract them.

injury cause by moose are actually more common then by bears it's just the injury from a bear attack are more serious... 10 to 20 people get attack each year by moose in North America... the rut season and bow hunting as well as cows defending their calf from dogs or hikers are mostly the reason.
