Gun, Poison, Trap? How should I do it in?

You are welcome to come by any time..... just remember to bring along your trailer and take back your darn snow plow. Getting tired of storing it for you. While you are here, you can also take the ex back to Ohio... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,
Some folks run a hose or pipe from a tractor or auto exhaust into the hole entrance. CO puts the little guy to sleep.

pineridge: correct no match needed the gas alone is deadly by removing the O2 in the den. it does work not sure how well on muskrats though as the den for tose usually goes UP in relation to the entrance (water level oor just above level.)

the corn on cob does work for a treat to get them UP above water, they also eat lake weeds which is their only redeaming quality since the pelts dropped below 50 cents a wack... back in 70s we got anywhere from 1 ~1.25 on good sized ones for a while... we ran some 60 trpas when I was a kid (I say WE when it was mostly my brother & his older friend though I got to retrieve the wet rats many a time...) 5 am trap setting prior to school /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif not sure what I was thinking lol

note that some copper line can be added to the propane torch so that the end is slid up into den a long wayse make sure the gas feeds all way to end and cover the entrance with some dirt. pull out the torch after 30 or so min of running at or on a low setting no flame...

also smoke bombs tossed in can and will burn up a lot of the O2 to help get the critters finished off. toss in 3 or 4 lit ones with the propane line ran down then cover, leave propane off then after 5 min smoke bombs are out and stinky gas in den then add propane to finish off the lack of O2...

the smoke bombs will eave stink in there so they don't want to return... very hard packed hole with some old coat hangers and or broken glass can help stop them from digging the holes back out but usually results in them digging right by the old run if they are in a different den or out in the lake or weeds hiding.

Mark lots of good and useful information that you supplied thanks.

So far the live trap hasn't done the job, but then I haven't seen the critter either. There are lots of ponds close by and I'm starting to think that he may have moved on without leaving a forwarding address which wouldn't disappoint me a bit.

I'm going out tonight with a shovel and close the hole off just to see if there is any activity by morning. If so we'll move to the next step.

Don't know about muskrats, but that's a good technique for hunting moles. Stomp your heel down across the tunnel every 10-20 feet and check them twice, daily. If your footprint pops up, its an active tunnel.

Moss I have no previous experience with muskrats myself but I think this one moved on to greener pastures. I didn't catch him in the 2 days that I had the live trap set so I dug up and filled in his burrow or in case he was Mexican burrito. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Those little babies can dig let me tell you. Anyway I have been keeping an eye on the area and haven't seen any indication that it was trying to resurrect it's previous dwelling so in this case all's well that ends well.

( leghold traps suck! Anyone who uses them is not cool! Cruel. Shoot him or use a more humane trap. Posions suck, they may kill something else and too much suffering..... I kinda like muskrats I don't think they really hurt a dam like folks think.... Nothing you can't fix in five minutes.. They are kina cute...... If your gonna kill them kill them quick.... You would want the same..... )

Would a drownding set be humane enough for you. It was my favorite when I ran a trap line for rats. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well, I'm glad it has moved on... however, you may have missed out on a nice coin purse or something. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
