GUN SAFE

Leaving quality magazines loaded doesn't have any effect on the spring. Cyclic fatigue, not static loading, is the predominant failure mode in magazine springs -- or any type spring for that matter.

I thought that might be the right answer, but I do worry about leaving mags loaded for years myself.

Was at a guys house and he showed me a Luger he brought back from WW2 with the original loaded mag still in it 60+ years later :confused2: Felt like it still had good tension.

The guy died, but I'm still trying to track down that gun, I have some solid leads.

i'd have to agree.. if within it's plastic deformation limit.. the spring should be fine, if it was a quality one to begin with.

i'd be worried about the zytel plastic material breaking down and powdering up befor ethe spring , floorplate and follower went....

Ok you've got my attention, 1/4" steel all around, 16 bolts, 1250 lbs, holds 27 guns, and shelving, with a sticker price of only $2050. That sound just about perfect. Do they have a web site, or a number. It's well worth a road trip. I will try looking them up myself, but any additional info you have would be appreciated. Thanks

Don't think you could go wrong with a Drake safe. I talked with the owner of Drake one time at a gun show, and in all respects, same as dealing with Sturdy. Good people who make the product themselves who stand behind what they make (American made with pride). For myself, I was "more" sold on the layered fiberglass insulation than fire board (as mentioned, the UL ratings on most gun safes are to some extent, a joke, and it becomes even a bigger joke IMO when it comes to fire rating a RSC "safe").

If I'm in your shoes, a road trip would be the way to go with a Drake. I'd figure 8 hours drive time border to border (NY to NC). I could be wrong though, but something to add to the cost is if your going to physically buy it in NC, you will have to pay NC tax, where as if they shipped the safe to you, you'd be exempt from the state tax. If that is the case, the question is if the added tax plus gas/time would offset the shipping costs (the only negative comments I could really find on the Sturdy was the fact that the safe was slightly "dinked" during shipping, but most of those comments were made years ago and it seems that Sturdy has worked on "freight proofing" their safes). Freight can be a roll of the dice cost wise, particularly when dealing with something of substantial weight.

For what it's worth, my next smaller safe will be a drive to Drake myself.

With either company (Sturdy or Drake), it's somewhat reassuring that you can talk directly with the people who are designing/manufacturing what you're buying and are on the working line of the product. Kind of hard to find that in today's manufacturing world where everything is imported to save a buck. Also nice to know that your hard earn money is going to an American company with American employees for a great product that offers a great value compared to what is out there (ok, off the political soap box now LOL).

Any idea if the Drake safe has a metal interior lining like the Sturdy has?

Also, what about warrantee? Do they replace the safe if damaged? Is shipping included if they do?

I guess I should be asking Drake safe these questions, but I am out right now and very bored, so I figured I'd ask you.

The Drake does not have the metal interior lining (at least when I saw them last year). Drake being 1/4" steel instead of 7 gauge, not sure why you'd need the 14 gauge interior lining:thumbsup:

Don't know about Drakes warranty, but can't be too far off everyone else.

I do know with Sturdy that if you have a house fire and it's a fire lined safe, the safe gets replaced and freight is included. If you have a burglary attack and the safe needs to be replaced, unless you buy the extended warranty for $150, you will pay the freight even though the safe is "free" (as well as a locksmith fee if the safe needs to be opened due to an attack without the extended warranty).

Then again, Cannon safes proclaim they have the best warranty in the industry (you pay NOTHING for as long as you own your safe). They've GOT to be the best safe out there:D That said, if someone breaks into your safe and takes everything, replacing the safe is the least of my worries.

I found the third review interesting. Guy owned a Sturdy, still lost everything in the safe, and still recommended the company.
