I have considering the mini 14 vs other AR rifles myself
You'll pay about $250 more for an AR.
Ask people who have owned a "basic" mini how their accuracy is. I had one (I'll take a wood stock over plastic anyday). I'm don't consider myself a good shooter, however, some people will say I don't shoot that bad. For myself, the standard mini really left me dissapointed (although years ago, the cost of one isn't as high as they are now).
I find it amusing on all the aftermarket mini 14 kits now on the marketplace to turn the mini into an AR "looking" rifle.
With an basic AR platform (knowing what to start off with), the fact is you have so many options per configerations, it's ridiculous. Buy one lower, get a 16" upper for CQC, and get a 20 plus inch for varmit. The choices are many. You don't have that option with a mini.
but I'm pretty sure the Ruger mags are going to cost you quite a bit more to buy
And I remember when Ruger wouldn't produce "high cap mags" for the mini. Aftermarket was the only way to go (haven't looked, but would wonder if Meggar makes the 20 rounder now). That said, with an AR, 30 rounders can be the norm for half the cost of Ruger's 20 rounder (100 round plus mag for the AR can be a hoot given the proper circumstances). Get a rifle that is desinged to throw huge amounts of lead down range quickly, magazine capacity is a consideration.
Now, what you really want to look at is the Robinson Arms XCR rifle.
The M96 (U.S of course, not Sweedish) was expensive for it's time, but was also ahead of it's time for a U.S production combat rifle (not to mention the Galil from ******, which has been out now for over 40 years now).
Seems now that Bushmaster has bought out Magpul for the "new" ACR rifle, for some reason the U.S "gun" population is now catching on (isn't marketing wonderful

)
