Khaki Air Force was that time just after separation from the Army Air Corp (1947) when they still used army uniforms and ranks.

When I came in in 1966, we still had a Khaki uniform but it was a modified from the army type and we had Air Force rank by then, like A1C, A2C, & A3C. People just loved being called a second and third class citizen. Our security police were called Air Police, APe's for short. The Air Force was still having growing pains.

:Would you believe how hard it is to launch a plane these days without a computer?

Yes I would. One time in Japan in 1980, we had to shut the Aerial Port computer down for a week to upgrade the building. Everyone assured us that they could do it the old fashion way using calculators. It was ok for Air Force pilots but we had nine 747's setting on the tarmac before I could get that computer backup. No commercial pilot was willing to take off without the computer printout telling them how much fuel was needed.

I was on the USS George Washington SS(B)N 598, USS Jack SSN 605, USS Topeka SSN 754 and USS Columbus SSN 762,

oh yes there was a stint on the USS Fulton AS 11 in Nuclear Repair Division. And a few shore commands during my 20 year stint.

Gunny,

See what you started? This is how we we get things going here. It is amazing how a thread can grow beyond it original intention. It is a lot of fun as well as educational. Kinda like our "Sea Stories" sometimes. Ask a technical question and see where that goes.

Gunny,

I've been trying to send you the music files in a private message and I'm wondering if you got them. I also tried to send by e-mail, and it gets returned saying that your account does not exist. What am I doing wrong ? ?

Always love a good "Sea Story". The difference between a "Fairy Tale" & a "Sea Story".......A "Fairy Tale" begins "Once upon a time....." and a "Sea Story" begins " This ain't no S***".
