:welcome:Welcome Gunny from a 26 year Air Force guy who was the son of a 20 year man who joined the khaki Air Force in 1948. Before Daddy joined up enlisted he was in ROTC. Said there was a Marine in there who fought the Battle of Paris Island for 3 years during WWII. Also said the Marines were useful - "Every country needs a suicide squad."
Me - I was just a simple Communications Maintenance guy. Worked in some places I could tell you about, but would have to kill you afterwards. Most of the time I was in heavy airlift units sending cargo to war zone. Would you believe how hard it is to launch a plane these days without a computer?

Hey Daver!!! Khaki Air Force = Army Air Corps? Never underestimate us "jarheads". We like to come off "country"and "slow", though those two things don't necessarily go together. Wow, I really do have some small modicum of people skills...
Not familiar with the WWII Battle for/of Paris Island though. More of a Vietnam buff myself. I do dabble in WWI though, trench warfare was Nasssty stuff!
Lost your thread in replying advanced option so I'll have to make this a two-parter... Gunny

Nope, no suicide berserker here... I trained, and trained others, hard so the enemy could die for their country.
Takes a lot to get any of my "war stories" out of me. Did have a PRC-77 that I was quite fond of. Not extremely mechanically inclined though and couldn't figure out a "work around" for the large lithium battery packs which I could still purchase/obtain for large $$$. Traded it off to another comm guy along with some field phones and wire for a Bobcat attachment. Gunny

Was corpsman (HM2) with BAS 2/9, 3rd Div...'73-'74 , BLT 2/9 summer of '74 , and some Eagle Pull time too . Got removed from EP in time to go back to WORLD but lost friends when Marines tried to rescue Miaguis (sp) crew from Cambodian held island.

Oh yes that reminds me.

Remember the recruiting poster for the Marines about looking for a few good men. They already have them....Navy Corpsman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Seabees stirred up a sh** storm over that one. Shortly after the Bees came out with a poster; The SEABEES are looking for all Good Men!. Two weeks after it hit the street SECNAV ordered it pulled and destroyed.

Campbell Soups made a special run of "Canned Do" for the Seabees. Wish I would have kept one of those now. Contents are not verified

Welcome aboard Gunny,

I am enjoying this thread. I am retired Navy myself. However I currently have one son in the Army and one that was in the Marine Corps. Interesting times at our house, so to make it easier one time when they were both home on leave I sat them down for a little chat. Told them I really did not want to put up with any interservice rivalry between them.

I reminded them that during World War 2, the Marines mainly fought in the Pacific and the Army mainly fought in Europe. (I know there are always exceptions) but ...... when you can fight on both fronts like the Navy then you can brag!!!

EM1 (SS) Retired

There are only two types of ships in the Navy.... SUBMARINES and targets!

Good to meet you EM1/ss

I was an ET2/ss (not retired) I served on the USS Bluefish SSN 675 when Ronaldus Maximus was running things.
Bubbleheads gotta stick together, ain't many of us anymore...

My Army gig was in the S2 and W was in charge...

Be well,
David

Khaki Air Force was that time just after separation from the Army Air Corp (1947) when they still used army uniforms and ranks.
