Gx345 high idle

   / Gx345 high idle #11
I have a 345 that has the opposite problem. Just last week for some unknown reason, the engine is running too fast. My wife was mowing and said the tractor would act like it wanted to die, so she would throttle it back, the engine would pick back up, and she would continue mowing, then after a while would die. It would start fine. I changed the fuel filter, started the tractor, and noticed that on full speed, or even at idle it was running way too fast. My neighbor has a JD and hers did it a couple years ago. What happens is that it runs so fast that it is using fuel faster than it can go into the filter bowl. I adjusted her carburetor and all has been fine, but on my 345, I don' see where to adjust anything. Any clues?

The carb should be pretty conventional with the adjustment screws and all. How close have you looked?

Problem sounds like possible fuel venting not working, or dirt. But that is just a guess. I'd look at fuel supply to the carb (filter, blockage, fuel pump, etc.) before just playing with carb adjustments first. Just my thought....

Your 345 will have a "throttle plate" down next to the carb --- sounds like you need to adjust fast idle by using that plate. I may not have this all just exactly correct but basically you move the throttle to the fast position and then loosen the plates mounting screws and move that whole plate just a bit to the right I believe to get fast idle set at 3400 rpm. If you need it, I may be able to find the tech manual instruction to accomplish this. Send me a PM with your E-Mail.

Why not post it here for all TBN'rs to see in the future? Sounds like great info to have.

I found the Tech Manual procedure to adjust fast idle on the 345. I hope it's attached ---- we'll see.

Looks like it'll work. Needless to say you'll need a tach of some kind (I use a "Tiny Tach"). You'll need to remove the hood and the shield between the muffler and the carb/fuel pump. May need to remove the front bumper if you have the three piece plastic one.
