gyro meat, where to get outside restaurant?

I occasionally like a gyro ( beef flavor ) pita.. we have a local greek place that sells them .. cheese pita and the sliced meat off the skewer, plus the cucumber sauce.

I would like to eat them for dinner sometimes whn working and the stores not open late.. I can find pita and cheese and even the cucumber sauce.. but havn't been able to locate anyone selling the meat.. I seem to recall used to being able to get it pre-sliced in the freezer sections of some grocery stores.. but that's been a decade since I even looked before.. hit the local walmart, publix and winn dixie and didn't see anything.

any ideas?

How about asking the local Greek place if they will sell you a couple pounds of the meat?

We buy Pita bread from our local Greek place and they are are more than happy to sell it to us.

I crave a good Gyro and beign in the middle of Norwegian country they are hard to find.

There are several good recipes for home made Gyros Make it like a meat loaf. IT IS NOT THE SAME.
I looked into purcahsing a Rotissere and they are exspensive, Ebay has them. You can order the Rounds from Sysco.

My wife buys a gyro kit at the grocery store a few times a year. It comes with pitas, meat, and cucumber sauce. Maybe your store stopped carrying it due to low demand. Ask them at the customer service counter if they carry it. Maybe they moved it.

Gyros are not made from beef, they are made from either goat or sheep. I suppose in America some of them are made from beef, because sheep slaughterhouses are few and far between. Gyros are the preferred fast food through Europe and the Middle East. In the East, they are called shawarma.

Gyro meat for restaurants can be purchased as beef only, or in beef/lamb like most gyro restaurants have, or as chicken, too.

I was talking about real gyros, not so much the American equivalent. American gyros are kind of like chow mein Chinese - the theory is sort of there.

see.. that's EXACTLY what I remember.. the entire kit with the pita and cuc sauce..

You know guys all these posts about what oil to use keep the air cleaner clean in our tractors and were sticking this crap in our body Im guilty of it 2.

If you have a SproutsMarket near you they sell the Kronos slices its okay just chopp it up when cooking but they do have a good cucumber sauce for it. First time I was introduced to them I was appalled seeing them slice the meat off the cone I was like I aint eatin that but man are they tasty very bad but OH so good. When ever I get a chance to go to Dallas there is a Greek place near the 635/preston that has a all you can eat lunch :drool:YUM and that lemon soup been a while havent been since I brought tractor over a year now just might have to go now that you made me think of them Think I need a filter!!

IS this where they slaughter the animals? I was always told they are very easy to skin. We always told anyone new to Gyros that they were little animals running aorund the sewers of Chicago. Kind of like the snipes. Then we would order them a gyro plate from Perros Bros. It weighed about 6Lbs. Greeks salad, 3 Lbs of meat, 3 pitas and fries. Sauce on the side. They were hooked for life.

We've got a regional chain around her called King Gyros. They server Kronos meat products. Man, are they tasty. King Gyros also has a huge menu of other foods. Their ribs are the best in town.

we have 1 greek restaurant local... closes early. about 2 cities up ( 45minute drive ) have another with even worse hours. about 3 cities ( 2hr ) over on the coast is a lebanese restaurant that while it has good hours.. is so far away it's unrealistic to go to unless in that area..

I'm sorry to hear that. We have 3 within 10 minutes of my work and one about a mile from our house. I think there are 5 within 30 minutes. I eat lunch there about once every 2 weeks with my wife and about once a month with the whole family we get carry-out. Usually one Gyro platter with an extra pita bread (there is enough meat for three normal gyros on one platter), an extra order of feta cheese for the kid (she calls it stinky cheese) and a slab of ribs. Oh, man.... I'm hungry! :licking:

That cucumber sauce is called Tzatziki, and is really easy to make. Here is a good recipe.

The only place I ever ate gyros was Chicago in the late 70s and at a county fair in Pennsylvania in 1993. I liked them both times but have never seen any in my part of the country, but that may only be because I've seldom eaten in any of the Greek food places.:laughing:
