Good thread, lots of good work and info, plus some of Paul's philosophical considerations. Since I have some hearing loss, and no interest in any more, I am fussy about hearing protection. I wonder if noise-cancelling headphones would work for the drone issues? When I fly with my brother, drone is serious, and without the noise cancelling feature on, you'd suffer, but with it, no problem. Hope I live long enough to see what Paul posts on his street rod project... oughta be sweet!!

I'm not saying your wrong. Actually you could be right but I've tried tactical ear muffs, Regular ear muffs, Stihl ear muffs and even foam plugs. Could be there's nothing between my ears and I'm just getting the echo  The Stihl muffs are the best by far though.

I wear foam earplugs all the time, and have found them far better than ear muffs. Did you not see/hear a difference with the foam plugs?

Tapered plugs are better than barrel plugs imho.

Have you tried plugs and muffs together?

3M E-A-R Soft Earplugs, Yellow-Neon, 200-Pack - Amazon.com

These are the ones I use - I have 3-4 different ear muffs, and each one seems to have a resonant point that doesn't get along with one noise source or another.

The plugs with the little built-in cord drive me nuts (short trip :=) - they whistle while you walk (wind on the cord transfers into the plug - weird)

Also, a lot of the time I either don't want things sticking out from my head and/or it's too muggy to want something clinging to trap even more sweat... Steve

I use ear muffs when mowing or on tractor. But the ones I use have a built in am/fm radio in them. Nice without a cab. I even use them if I am doing hand work and want a radio. Probably not the best but after a couple of years of using them I can tell a difference in what I can hear and I am still young. Should use ear plugs when hunting but they cut out so many soft noises in the woods that I hate wearing them. Plus I have found that I am a lot louder because I can't hear myself move.

Anyways after my experiences I think everyone should wear some for of ear protection even if they are uncomfortable.

Gee guys. I'm sorry for not responding. This one got away from me  I've got all the different types of ear plugs, head phones and ear muffs. The ear muffs are hot to wear in the summer but I tried wearing the foam plugs and the ear muffs the other day and it's the best yet so I'm happy now. Thanks for your suggestions

Yesterday, I was talking with some guys who are trying to find water on my neighbor's 25 acres. 9 dry wells so far! I noticed they had some ear plugs I had never seen before, with concave ends showing- they had to twist their heads towards me to hear me. Since they work 8 hours a day next to a real loud diesel rig, I need to check these out more.

Please post if you find out. There has to be a better option than earmuffs for some situations.
