Man, know the feeling, our old fella was killed by 3 pit bulls. Hard to loose a "buddy" that's been around a while. I have no doubt your other horses feel the loss as well.

buck - sorry to hear about your loss. we had a similar incident a few years ago with our 20yo. let them out to pasture went to town, came back a few hours later, saw him laying in the sun thought, hmmm he's enjoying the nice spring day, about 15 minutes later was still laying down so went to check on him was very sweaty and didn't want to get up. forced him up and my wife thought he had colic'd so she walked him a while until the vet got here. diagnosis was twisted gut. so sad to see a horse in that much pain and very expensive operation and low survival rate. we decided to let him pass to greener pastures, hardest part was rolling him into the hole I had dug for him. still have a cross over his site and think about him often. remember him often and the good times you all had with him. tough to lose one of our "furry" kids..

you will meet your faithful companion again. a pain free death is the last gift we can give our 4 legged friends when their body fails them. RIP Rebel.
Couldn't have said it better. Get some of those pictures of your fallen friend, framed for you to look at and smile about the good times you all had.
RIP Rebel

Horses grab at us, and work there way into our hearts. Same story for our Tiger, 28, had him as a 2 year old. Colic 2x. Second didn't make it. IV, banamine, and our vet tubes mineral oil into them. Still hurts thinking about him. But at least they are not in pain.

I like your horse there- good face on him.

I'm very sorry to hear to hear of your loss but when we hear of a loss like this we know that it was a well loved horse that always got the best treatment.
I'm not looking forward to the day that's not too far away when we lose one of our favorite horses that are 32 and 25 years old now. We've shown them in many different events in horse shows and team pennings, trail rides, Mardi Gras parades and just riding around the neighborhood since they were very young and its hard to realize that they (and us) have reached senior citizen status.

Right now the 32 year old still runs around like a young filly and no one would guess she is that old but we brought her on her last Ozark Mountain trail ride a couple of years ago for fear of something happening to her far from home.

Our horses are our family and our lives but we realize that we all meet the end of the trail someday.

I got this off Tractorbynet some time ago:

Don't cry for the horses
That life has set free
A million white horses
forever to be

Don't cry for the horses
Now in God's hands
As they dance and they prance
To a heavenly band.

They were ours as a gift
But never to keep
As they close their eyes
Forever to sleep

Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
A million white horses
Against the blue sky Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved

Manes and tails flowing
They gallop through time
They were never yours
They were never mine

Don't cry for the horses
They will be back someday
When our time has come
They will show us the way

Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here.

bucktaker, sorry to hear about your horse. My wife and I have been there too many times. We did actually have a mare survive surgery with a twisted gut. She eventually colicked at 31 years of age so we had to put her down about two years ago. We do have a thirteen year old gelding out of her after that surgery by the way. I hate the quiet barn and the empty stall. I swear you can feel and hear that presense.
