i butted mine tight. The last boards were 1/8-1/4 gaps from shrinkage. I used the same holes so they should look like the boards when new. and they are butted up tight except where there is a slight bow.
There was crud down on the boards on the frame but mostly in the sided were the edge of the board allowed stuff in on the edge between it and the bottom angle iron as those boards are on a slight angle anyway.
I tried to use the pressure washer periodically or the hose to get the leaves from between the cracks as to not hold it on the frame and wood.
