Half throttle for starting???

One of the more important properties of engine oil is that it sticks to metals. Even if your tractor has been sitting for a couple of weeks, there is a thin film of oil over all the parts that normally get oil on them. We're talking microns here, but that's enough to prevent metal to metal contact and thus save a lot of wear. That's why an engine can run "without oil" for quite a while like some of the old TV ads showed. You won't wear it off before a running engine brings some more oil in to take it's place, presuming you have oil in there.

Even so, it grates on the nerves of those sensitive to the machinery to see someone start things at full throttle. It just seems wrong.

That's when you put a bucks head with antlers (rack) on the front of your tractor Bob. All hunters know that.....

DocBob.. I'm not a diesel mechanic.. or any kind of a mechanic.. but in general.. when I hear of 'rack adjustments' made in general.. they are refering to setting the valve train on an engine. Thus .. I would guess that the word 'rack' used for a diesel injection pump must refer to some valving involving fuel metering.

That's just a guess.. I'm sure a diesel mechanic will be along here shortly to give you the play-by-play of the operation of the injection pump.. etc.

Yep Soundguy,, that was a great layman's description. That's exactly what it is and it's a delicate adjustment to properly deliver fuel equally to each cylinder during operation.

Yep, I'm not a fly boy, I just travel a lot. Spent the last couple months flying around Baghdad area which is where the flare shot was taken. I think we have shared the same areas, Liberty, Washington, Falcon, Kalsu, Rustamyiah, Anaconda, and all points North. Been here 8 months and have slept in 49 different beds in five different countries. It's a hoot!!!
