One of the more important properties of engine oil is that it sticks to metals. Even if your tractor has been sitting for a couple of weeks, there is a thin film of oil over all the parts that normally get oil on them. We're talking microns here, but that's enough to prevent metal to metal contact and thus save a lot of wear. That's why an engine can run "without oil" for quite a while like some of the old TV ads showed. You won't wear it off before a running engine brings some more oil in to take it's place, presuming you have oil in there.
Even so, it grates on the nerves of those sensitive to the machinery to see someone start things at full throttle. It just seems wrong.
