Hammers

I can think of only seven hammers off the top of my head. But compared to a lot of TBNers, I'm basically a just a beginner wannabe on the yardstick of manliness. No doubt many more hammers are in my future.

I have a countless number. A hammer is anything or any tool I can get ahold of to beat something with. Sometimes thats a wrench, or a peice of firewood, or a cinder block:D

But actual hammers

4 mallets
2 brass hammers
6 ball peens
3 claw hammers
2 mauls (used to drive wedges)
2 sledge 8lb and 16lb
2 3lb hammers

so 21 off the top of my head

still not enough. Hammers tend to always grow legs and wander off when I am working on something. Not to worry, thats why I have many.

Don't get me wrong, I like hammers. Especially old, interesting ones.

Anyway, How many hammers do you have?

Cliff

Cliff, how many hammers do you need to make dovetail joints? I still remember all those beautiful drawers you made and the perfect dovetails.

BTW: When counting hammers, do I get to count my Crescent wrench hammer and all the pipe hammers? If I have a sledge hammer with a busted handle, does that count? I probably have at least 30 hammers, but my favorites are my pneumatic palm hammer and the pneumatic chisel I converted to a hammer for driving spikes while building retainer walls.

I'll bet I could compete in this contest with the best of you

I would have to try and count, but being a contractor for 30 years, it will be alot. Not that I've bought many of them new, surely less than 10%. But have been collecting them for ever.

I had to stop taking 8lb sledges home from people I've worked for that didn't need them anymore, it was getting a little ridicules. I've got pails of hammers I don't use now.

The hammer I use most is the 24oz. Estwing mason hammer, these I have to buy new every couple of years.

Also my Slate roofer's hammers. one is a 100+ year old collectors item, a Belden that sits on a shelf in my office. the other is as old, A stortz I use regularly.

This requires the infamous fist-hammer. It's easy to control and provides a sort of dead-blow hammer affect. Also, if it hurts it means you need to shave a little more off the dovetail pin.

You and JD227 should get together. You could call it "Hammer Time!!!"

Just saw this thread, and what you said about me is really funny. If it were not so freaking cold I would go out to my 5 outdoor shops and count all my hammers...but I can tell you that in my basement shop I have the following:

2 claw hammers

1 ball peen hammer

1 plastic tip hammer

1 6 pound sledge hammer

2 tack hammers

1 upholstery hammer (used for driving tacks and brads)

Can I tell you guys a hammer story? Back in 1980 I was helping my dad reroof his house, and he dropped his hammer off the roof. Because he didn't want to make a trip down the ladder to get it, he picked up my steel square and began using it to drive roofing nails. When I saw him, I said "Hey dad, what is that you are using for a hammer" and he told me it was a square. "That's right, and it won't be square for very long if you use it for a hammer...." He looked at me for a minute, then sat my square down and went after his hammer....
