Not familiar with PA gun laws but in Michigan you would get a purchase permit even though it is inherited. In Michigan its not a big deal to get the permit. You return it filled out and the pistol becomes registered to you.

You might just make a call to your local pd or sheriff dept.

When I have taken a weapon to the gunsmith, or just to the shop to get value, I go in first and tell them I want to bring something in for them to look at. Then, I go out and bring it back in.

Also, put it in a paper sack before you walk into the store with it.
Sometimes people get nervous when they see a gun in a strangers hand and you can bet that the guy behind the counter has at least one gun on him and a few more very handy,,, and all are fully loaded and ready for action.

I have done it that way also if I parked close to the door. If I had to park very far away I prefer to put it in a sack so the general public can't see it.

Thanks for all the good advice. Will take it to a local gunsmith and have it checked out.
