I'm familiar with Garrett County, MD and understand your wife's concern. My parents have a place just accross the line near in WV near the Cranesville Swamp. I keep my pistol with me at nights.
Have you thought about this one coat rack I bought one for my wife for the coat rack but it looks like something that might work for you. Keep it up high enough out or your kids reach and leave the key in the top at night and remove the key during the day. I know it's meant for a rifle but would work for a pistol.
Just an idea.

That's pretty cool.

My 870 pump shotgun has a little button you must press to chamber the first round. A child would have a hard time with that but the wife isn't confident in handling a long gun in 12 gauge and if she's afraid of the gun it can only hurt the situation.

It's been said that the sound of a pump shotgun action being cycles is one of the most recognizable sounds in the United States. People that have never touched a firearm know the sound from all the movies they've seen.

Hi Joe,
I have done some shooting from 200m and that was far enough for me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some of the coolest shooting I've done is with a .44mag lever action at 300 yds with open sights. We were shooting at metal silhouettes. There's just something about having the gun angled up at 5 - 10 degrees and that long delay before you hear the "clank" of a hit. With the open sights, I think aiming was more of a guess than anything else. I felt like Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove, when he was hiding behind his dead horse out on the plain with his Henry rifle. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Steve,

Yeah, that is perfect. That would work great. I think I will be giving them a call. We live way back in the woods on a farm and by the time the local Barney Fife, err, Law Enforcement Officer would get to my house it would be too late. Atleast for the bad guy anyway !! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do know one thing though, the game wardens are about and are where you would never expect to see them. We ran into one way back in no man's land on a 4 wheeler ride once.
You do have to put that thing together but it isn't too bad.
I got the coat rack for my wife for Christmas and still haven't hung it up yet. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I told her if I don't get to it before good weather sets in, it may be Christmas before it gets done as it will be tractoring time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
