Hi everybody, I have a simple question. My hands, probably because of age, are cold after few minutes while plowing snow or doing other chores in the cold/wind/wet. Never happened before so I believe this is due to the aging process. Not too good in many fields... I've tried many gloves or mittens with no major results. As soon as they get wet it's over. Which mitten/gloves do you use and recommend that does not cost as a new tractor with a cab? Thanks.

I'm completely satisfied with my Carhartt insulated nylon waterproof gloves. 40 bucks a pair and durable.

A lot of the outdoor stores up here carry small chem hand warmers that you slip into your gloves. I've never used them so that's that.

If you hands are getting cold with mittens you may have a circulation problem that you might want to bring up with a doctor. It could be something simple like a tight ring or watch bad or iron poor blood.

from my understanding mittens are recommended for keeping fingers warm better then gloves. But the problem is you cant do much with it if you have alot of hand work and buttons/controls to work with. So I ended up using snowmobile gloves for the bitter cold weather. It repels the snow from getting wet and its keeps me warm. For temps in 20-40 I use the fur lined carhart gloves and have 2 pairs. Once the gloves gets wet, it still keeps me warm for another 4 hours or till i feel dampness then I switch out the gloves. I hated using the hand chemical reaction warmers since it keeps the palms or top part of my hand warm and feels stuffy , but not the fingers with gloves. I basically try to keep my fingers moving to keep it warm. I only use the hand warmers for those cold football games my boys play in with mittens as it works better in mittens and still feel roomy. Hey - its just my 2 cents for me.;)

I also have a problem with poor circulation so I have gone to a 2 prong approach. Couple years ago in the sunday paper adds where some "space aged" silver thin gloves (I know not alot of help) Looked like what meat cutters use but a coth like material maybe thin insulate?. Then a company called Sportmans Guide sells used army artic mittens with cuffs/straps for about $20. That way I can pull a mitten off and use glove to uncover tractor start it and belt self in then mitton back on for rest of time. I can stay out in -10F for about 90 minutes b4 I need to let legs/face/eyes warm up hands chilly but not froze like B4

Just a suggest

I too have had a problem keeping my fingers comfortable ever since I froze them a bit while kayaking. Mittens are definetly the way to go. I usually use Gore-tex (waterproof) mittens that have some type of insulation and grippy palms. For really extreme conditions I have a pair of boiled wool mittens and army surplus shell covers with leather palms and a long cuff to seal them to my jacket. If you are lucky you can find the second type at an army surplus store and the first type at a Bean outlet, REI or EMS.
mmmmm toasty!

A bit of winter mountaineering wisdom that was shared with me many years ago said, "If your feet are cold put a hat on. If your feet are still cold put on a warmer hat". The same will hold true for your hands. Your body will slow or shut off the flow of blood to the limbs to keep the brain warm. So your head may feel warm, and be warm, but it is at the expense of the limbs. So get the biggest thick hat that you can find and then a good pair of mittens from EMS, REI, LL BEAN or any good outdoor equipment supply house. Don't forget the ears. Some of the goofest hats are the best.

On the coldest days I bundle up with a one piece snowmobile suit, rabbit hat, neck warmer (not a scarf) and snowmobile mits.
Look to snowmobile shops for hand warmers and electric mits.

Every winter our Costco sells hand warmer packs by the case, pretty cheap. so far one case has lasted me 3 winters. If it's really cold out in 2 per mitt, one on top, one in the palm. I wear pretty thick snowmobile mitts. Never have cold hands.
