That line in question form has been asked in different incantations here thousands of times, right? I get asked that question from friends and relatives frequently. So, what is the answer? Here is what I propose: The best tractor for the best price for you is the one that you, as an owner, wants, needs, can afford, has a reasonable reputation, has good dealer and manufacturer support, and you feel is priced fairly to you.

What do you think the best answer to that age old question would be? Feel free to add, change, disagree etc. with what I said. I'm just curious as to how you'd answer that question.

Best price, simple math.

Best tractor, highly subjective to opinions. No simple answer.

This is going one of two directions. There will be either a consensus of opinion (less than likely) or a bare knuckle brawl (My money is on this one).

Different people look for different features with their tractors. I'm in the camp that likes SIMPLE (to operate and work on), ECONOMIC (to buy and operate), DURABLE, and VERSATILE. I PREFER older tractors, as I see them as much more bang for the buck. Considering that most every brand has one or 2 models that are their flagship models, I don't see any one brand as my favorite or as a clear cut choice across the board. We would also have to determine what size tractor we're talking about, as certain brands/models excell in a certain size class.

I know what MY personal choice is. I already own it. Extremely unlikely there would be a long list who would take it as THEIR 1st choice.

That's sort of my point, and my answer. You didn't see it coming, but you agreed with me. :D You picked what would be the best for your particular needs at the price you felt was fair. How could that not be the best tractor for you?

I tried to answer the question from MY perspective and from the crowds viewpoint. It seems in general, most folks on this site lean towards newer compacts or small utilities. I was trying to consider all the possibilities there.

Strictly from my point of view, that ol Massey 150 that I bought and paid for back in 1971 is the best for me. 35 years of dependable use has only made me MORE convinced of such.

For the record, I do agree with all you said. My point is, even if everyone agrees on the "format", the end result (opinion) might be extremely different. Then the mud slinging starts. Ah well, it's almost election time, who's not used to mud slinging.

For diversities sake......I'll go the opposite....
All of them.
All walks of life will accept and want different things.
Some wouldn't own certain brands/models because of dealer support, but to what extent the "support" is is variable.
Can't get parts for it....
I'll make them.
All trade-offs.
Great parts support but unit is pricey......but hey the dealer is right down the road.
No parts support but unit is more economical...

Different strokes, different folks....

DARGO: First of all, great question! I choose everything very carefully, including my wife of nearly forty years. I tend to invest in everything for the long term; thus a lot of homework is required on my part, which is based on dependability, reliability, or trust. I don't like to be surprised by the shortcomings of any product! Appearance and ease of use is also important. Like everything in life, which we tend for perfection, or Calculus, where we work towards zero, knowing we can never get there. TBN has a lot of talent that contribute to help others make sound decisions on lots of things, including tractors.

At a younger age, when I needed a tractor to fill a void; used tractors were my only options, and enhanced my education with wrenches!! I still have my first, a 39' Ford 9N that I plan to restore someday?!
