I have this Dayton propane heater that I want to install in my barn/workshop. Barn is 40x64 with 12 sides. My house uses propane also, so I'm wondering if I should run a second line from the tank to the barn or get a second tank. I own my 500 gallon tank and our house never uses all of it in the winter.

The problem is the line would be run under the driveway and about 100-150 feet. I was also wondering if I could by two 100lb cylinders and use them, or would they run empty to fast? Barn would only be heated when I'm in it,,,,,, other times it would be set around 36ー.

Here are some pictures of the heater.

How fast it empties 2 100 lb cylinders will depend on how warm you want to be, , how well your barn is insulated, ambient, etc,

200,000 BTU input. It will eat some propane. That's burning 200 cubic feet of gas per hr... The area he's heating isn't small

I used a heater like this once for an outbuilding and found that a 250 gallon tank was a good size. You can adjust deliveries to your convenience and flexibility by watching the gage. Heaters like that can really go though a 100 pound cylinder pretty quick.

i did the same thing to my shop about 8 years ago. I bought a propane hanging heater . My shop was 300 feet from the tank, so i contacted my propane company to see what another tank would run. They told me it would be cheaper for them to run a high pressure line to my shop off of my existing heater and install a new regulator at the shop. They told me if i dig the hole, they will supply and install the plastic fuel lines.

It was a no brainer. I have no idea how much propane this unit would burn in a 8 hour work day (some days im in there all day...usually in winter). I didnt want to be bothered hauling those tanks around. The only sad thing is i had to pull a mechanical permit.....and get the work inspected. you know they had to increase my taxes cause i have heat in shop.

I think the 2 cylinders have been ruled out. The only insulation in the barn is the 1" thick fiber board as I call it. It is all through it, even the roof.

I'm either going to try to find a used 330 gallon tank, or run another line from current 500 gallon tank.

I thought you had to use copper lines? If I remember correctly, you only have to bury the line about a foot.

I got this furnace years ago for nothing and it's just been sitting. After this winter, it's time to use it!
When I first got it, I hooked up a 20 lb tank from my grill just to try it. It would work then stop. I think because of the small grill regulator.

Now I just need to figure out how to hook it all up along with venting it?????

Thanks guys

with todays shortage and price of propane you should tread wisely....... Better to insulate now and not blow through the money in propane.
