Hanging "Posted" signs- anything other than nails

the attorney that i bought the land from said i should drive rebar in the ground about 4" back off of the line and make a yearly/family ritual by going out and painting the rebar/fence post etc........on my birthday, the anniversiery of getting the property, new years, etc.....

That is a good idea as well. All of our corners are marked with pipes in the ground. Except one. This one marker is in a strange cut out corner of our land and it looks like a leaf spring from and old car with a base of piled up rocks.

We have pins inside our land and on the perimeter. The perimeters pins I have put a Tpost right next to the pipe. Then paint the T post with orange tape. In years past I would take the little foot tall flags and put them near the pipes. T Posts work better. I also have painted the pipes orange.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you keep the property line cleared if it is already cleared. I paid about $450 for one line to be resurveyed but with building the house cI ould not keep the line cleared. One day I'll have to pay to have the line redone. I had to get the line surveyed to keep a neighbor from putting his septic field on my land so I got my money's worth out of the work. The same survey kept the current neighbor from putting up a fence on my land. The next time the surveyors come out to work this line, MY fence will be put up shortly there after.

the seller of the land paid for surveying but it was as cheap as could be (still a lot of $$, though!)

i'm paying him $1000 to come back out and place pins along the perimeter lines (large square shaped 40 acres)....he said he'd place them so that i could string a line and put up a fence if i want to......he place 3' of 5/8 rebar in the ground with his locking yellow cap on the top........that's great because there isn't much arguement and i can always pull a line....

as soon as he's done with that, i'm gonna go around and drive a pc. of rebar in the ground but let it stick up about 4' above the surface.....then, like the seller suggested, go around about once a year and paint them......this'll help keep everyone friendly....

the ole' fellas there, now, know where the lines are but people 20 years down the road won't.......it could be the best $1000 i've ever spent!

I think they have safety caps for rebar. Seem like I saw them and they were brightly colored. I have a bag of bright yellow T Post caps for holding High Tensile wire. I need to take some of those and put them on the T Post marking the survey pins. Should make the post that much easier to see. Your post some how made me think of those yellow caps. Thanks.

You could put up a gate at the beginning of the road. A closed locked gate pretty much says "Stay out".

I've used shrink wrap already for POSTED signs. Works better than mechanical fasteners on trees and lasts a long time.

that's a good idea......i really didn't like the thoughts of seeing bright orange sticks around my property......back in a nice woods setting with birght orange sticks all around

I have all woods with very old, hard to find survey marks blazed onto the trees and spray painted. I have been walking my borders finding the old marks and re-blazing the trees and spraying them with purple posting paint.

My trick on keeping the No trespassing signs in place is to stand on the back of my 4 wheeler and then I reach I high as I can. That puts them around 12' or so off the ground. After 2 years they are still all in place.

One tip if you nail them on. Nail one side down, wrap the sign around the tree, then "arch" the sign a little bit before nailing the other side. This gives the tree room to grow without ripping the nails thru the sign. Using aluminum signs and aluminum roofing nails, getting 10+ years out a sign is no problem.

I put metal "T" posts in along the survey markings on some hunting land several years ago. Painted them bright orange and put one within sight of another all the way around the perimeter of a 90 acre parcel. Very few are left. I see them holding up mailboxes and stacks of firewood up and down the road.

How do I know they are, or were, mine? The orange paint is still visible, and I etched a mark in each one.

Two years ago I caught someone hanging a tree stand within sight of a no trespassing sign.

I'm rapidly loosing faith in people.
