I just finished watching the Sunday night ESPN broadcast of the Mariners at San Francisco. It was a good game in which Seattle never lead until the final pitch. It was lined to the outfield bringing home the tying and winning runs for the 7-6 Mariners win.

I'm not a die hard baseball fan. I don't even root for either of those teams. I was just happy I got to watch this on TV instead of hearing about labor negotiations on this holiday weekend.

If there is anything that I couldn't care less about in this world, its professional sports... don't really understand what the attraction is.

I find it hard to understand why people will go out to a game and root and cheer for a bunch of multi-millionaires running around the field...I'd much prefer to watch a local high-school baseball or football game than a bunch of overpaid, spoiled (and in many cases) drugged up "athletes"..who could really care less about being role models for young people or the joy of the game...they simply care about making a pile of money and racking up endorsements deals.

Even harder to understand is why taxpayers are often forced to pay for these $100Million+ stadiums so these spoiled millionaires have a nice play to play...at our expense...

No offense intended...I am glad you enjoyed watching the game...I would have preferred however they they went on strike and no one noticed..../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Gotta agree with ejb on this one. Someplace along the line, a point is reached when the ridiculous just becomes too unbearable.

Mike, and Ejb,

You definitely have a point. Professional sports is not what it used to be. I guess most of us , who love a Pro Sport, remember when things were different. Sports figures used to try to be role models, and most stayed with the same teams through their careers. I'm a big Football fan. I watch at least one game on every Sunday of the season. There still are some great players that do a lot of good for the cities that they play in. I guess it comes down to what you like. Everyone has their own thing. Most of them cost , you money. Look at all of us, with the "overpriced Garden Tractors". My neighbor told me that one. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Just my opinion. No offense to anyone.

I agree Mike and ejb. I would just as soon baseball would have striked and they would have suffered irreparable damage. Prof. sports of their caliber just disgusts me. The salaries these guys make and their attitudes just disgusts me.

I never thought my post would be one to stir controversy here. I just enjoyed watching a good game played at the highest level. I'm not opposed to HS or college sports. I generally prefer the atmosphere at a college basketball or football game to professional. I still like major league baseball over any amateur level. I'm a big basketball fan and it wouldn't be uncommon during the season for me to see pro, college, high school and grade school games played in a single week. They all have their place and I can appreciate each for what they are.

I'm not saying anyone else should like what I like. I just happened to watch a baseball game I really enjoyed and thought how I could have missed it because of a labor dispute. I looked at that as a positive thing.

I don't worry about how much the players earn when I watch them any more than I worry about what the CEO of John Deere earns when I buy a part. Frankly, I hope he is well compensated and I wish him well just as I do the ballplayers and the team owners.

Wow, Richard...It sounds like you have more of an emotional investment in pro sports than I do. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I'm reminded of somehting I say quite often to kids I coach. "Relax! It's just a game. It's not the end of the world here."

The entertainment industy seams to have many overly paid participants. In a free economy system it's all about marketing something that we buy regardless of price. Personaly I feel there are many other occupations that are of much more value to society that do not receive the renumeration or recognition they deserve. We, the people in general, are resposible for this imbalance.

Egon, I wish you'd come around the next time I argue for a pay increase.

Mike:
I'm a lousy negotiator [ used car dealers get this real big smile when they see me] beside a big pay raise would just start a big ulcer worryin over how to look after all that money.

Food producers, health care for the masses, and scientist's just may be the categories that are the most undervalued.
