If I am not mistaken, these have been discussed in detail either on the Miller Motorsports forum or the Hobart welders forum .

The biggest drawback mentioned was repair parts and consumables, especially consumables. I believe that the tips can only be bought thru HF.

You will also need a source for CLEAN and DRY air. This is most important since if effects consumable life.

I have a Miller Spectrum 375 plasma cutter and it was well worth the extra money. I use 3 air filters, the one on the compressor, another at the cutter and finally a MotorGuard after that. Gotta have that dry air. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have one - other than the On/Off switch sticking a bit it works just fine so far.

Actually consumables should be no problem - you can source them here:

HTP America Plasma Parts web page

Three filters here as well .... I used the money I saved to buy the MotorGuard filter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I borrow my neighbors frequently. It is not new and cost him a bit several years ago. I hook right on to the air compressor and give her heck, no dry air or filters. It needs to cut and cut it does. The two tip parts seem to last forever in a consumer type environment.

THAT is very useful info!!!! I was really wondering about the performance of the consumables under non-optimal conditions.
Thanks! Cheers!

He had bought a 5 pack of each of the two tip parts and we've tried to replace them because the cut wasn't pretty but it didn't help, then we discovered that clean metal and good ground are just as important when plasma cutting as they are with welding.

Honestly, the plasma cutter is an accurate gasless torch to me. If the impurities from wet air cause porosity in the slag then that's OK.

Gee whiz, I was just looking for gasless and portability with a finish better than hogging with a wet rod and a buzzbox ... accuracy and cleanliness would be fine as a treat. Thanks mucho for the info.

Why not just add a refrigerated dryer? Mine sets on the outlet side and I haven't had a need for any extra filters whether with tthe plasma or a paint gun.
