Harbor Freight Powder Coat Paint

For small parts you can heat the part then swish it in the powder, heat and spray the powder, or use a fluidizing bed..

Luremaker,

I've been making lead jigs for salt water fishing with a few fishing friends and I've been toying with the thought of powder coating these.......Can the lead be powder coated..?? Does it need any sandblasting for prep..?

Do you think this will work by preheating or baking the normal way in an oven.....

fluidizing bed...??

Thanx,

Bill

if there is not any oil or wax on the lead it should be fine as long as you keep the temp below 620 deg.

Bill. those are large jigs... I've made jigs up to 3-4 oz for lake trout and musky. I've powder coated some lead jig months after casting them without any prep and have had excellent results. I think lead is one of the few metals where prep work is not needed.

Here is a picture of my fluid bed and powder spray gun.

The fluid bed I use is basically a length of 4" pvc pipe caped on one end with a small air valve to regulate air flow into the pipe. The air source is a small aquarium air pump. The "cups" (3" pvc pipe) hold the powder coat are capped on one end with a special filter material which allows the air to pass through it but not any paint. Once the cup is inserted into the 4" pvc base air begins to pass through the filter material and fluffs of the paint. Now you preheat you jigs and dip them into the powder coat.

Is 14oz big enough..??

Got to love those cod fish. I have a friend in Newfoundland who fishes for cod. He tells me he never paints his jigs. He only uses a little silver reflector tape.

I'm all eyes and ears with this stuff cuz I have a bunch I'd like to powder coat....

I'm a little fuzzy understanding the concept of the fluid bed, is it to fluff the dry coating media and dip the jigs in while the air is circulating..??

Here's a link to another site that we made these jigs on......Note the hanging plugs for stripers on one of the posts....Wow..!!

We've discussed the reflector tape and will be doing a few with that in mind...

The jigs I used this past summer were all chrome with pink and red skirts, but we have a mold with "Butterfly Jigs" and these we want to experiment with other colors.....

The powder coating has always interested me but never had the materials to play around with....I'm definetly gonna check out Harbor Frieght, IIRC we have a new one in Merrimack, NH........Time to plan a road job......

Thanks for the link. I could not see any of the photos.

Sorry my explanation wasn't very clear. That's right, the fluid bed keeps the powder light and fluffy so that the powder does not compact and make good contact with the heated jig head. I use a propane torch to preheat my jigs before dipping because I only paint a dozen at a time. If I was painting hundreds of jigs at a time I would preheat them in my oven.

I also have a mold for the butterfly jig. Mine is for a 3/4oz and 1oz. jig. I place a single treble hook and jig for walleye with them. If I remember correctly commercial molds are available to cast butterfly jigs up to 7oz.

Here's a look at half of the last batch of lead we casted......all from wheel weights.......the 20oz weights are pretty hefty......no need for hooks, just drop them on their heads....:confused2:

two of the butterfly jigs with paint and reflective stickers already finished....

Those look like fish catchers to me. Those butterfly jigs must be 7oz and 9oz. You should have no problem powder coating them.
