I love giving them my number. They have me in the system and it keeps a copy of my purchases in the event I loose a receipt. They also email me a receipt for my records

Before we got our store I bought 10 times more Harbor Freight then now, like you I think there attitude at check out is to much, they change prices faster then most people change there socks, have reduced there warranty down to three months , do not have wifi in the store and I receive my price coupons in a email ,paid them there Inside Track dues for a year which was just money out the window so I feel one way or another I will pay more then the advertised prices, all of our farm stores and big box store have all the imported tools now and if they dont ebay does. There usefulness is running out and will have to change there hiring practices or follow Circuit City, K mart and Radio Shack to the grave. I will give credit where credit is due and Harbor Freight can suck the joy out of a new purchase just about ever visit. Best Buy and WalMart have been the ones to make big turn around in there business practice the last few years, service, pricing and shipping is making amazon look bad.

I don't have a problem with giving out my phone number to HF and I have never, NEVER had a call from them. I do get spam calls from other folks that I have not given out my phone number too, but it is easy enough to just hang up. Unless you have an unlisted number, you aren't giving away any secrets, so what is the beef.
I also get email with copy of my sales receipt everytime I shop there (which isn't that often given that the store is 70miles away). Lots of stores (Walmart, Lowes etc) are now keeping track of your purchases so you no longer need a receipt when returning.

Ditto on that. AutoZone does the same for warrantees. Tractor Supply does the same for tax exempt accounts. A lot of places use the phone number as an account index. And when they see I've been a customer for 20+ years, checkout is a breeze and I don't get a second lip about returns or exchanges. I usually pay by check for farm or shop tools or parts and they don't give me a second glance on 3 or 4 digit amounts.

But I can see where Maine would be a grouchy place to be after November 8th. :D

I never answer my phone unless I know who is calling. It's always on mute, so even if I know who you are, I wont here it. I get a dozen calls a day from all over the country. My phone number is posted on my FB page and it's all over the place. I don't understand what anybody can do with it who has it.

I'm usually out and about w/ the wife when we stop by HF.. and when asked about a phone # my go-to response is..
I think your cute too, but my wife would get angry if we started going out..lol.. then I give them my work #..

Call it for one, from all over the country. I get maybe 3 calls a day on average and it's usually my wife. I don't want people calling me if they don't know me, lol.

Its my understanding that theres a new or not so new tax code that requires a business to charge TAX's on a persons location rather than the business's address..
Here is SC there are so many different tax % from 1 county to the next that they started charging by the persons LOCATION..
Where I live the tax rate is 6%.. when I go to Charleston the tax rate is 11%.. Darn right I'm giving them my phone#.. lol

Once your number is out there, who knows what other outfit it's shared with! Not saying HF does this but absolutely no way will I ever give out my number to any retailer. Most clerks are fine when I just politely say "no thank you" to their request for my #. If not, well-- tough.

Same with "what's your zip code". My reply "no thank you". "But we just use it for our own internal marketing purposes!". I could care less about helping you with your internal marketing!

Just my opinion, but I believe the phone numbers (and zip codes at the gas pump) are used for some sort of marketing purpose; i.e., they know what you buy, when you buy it, and the general area where you reside. It would help them in their advertising, marketing and maybe even with their inventory.

All of our friends and family call our cell phones, knowing that's the best/quickest way to reach us. It's a rare occasion when our home phone rings, and it's almost always a solicitation call (so much for no-call lists).

That said, I don't have a problem giving it to HF. I've never received any calls from them. As noted above, it's an account link, because most people will never remember their actual account number.

I don't go to HF for the shopping experience. Every one of them smells like freshly-cured Chinese rubber (nothing wrong with that).

I go there for cheap tools for occasional use, some have had surprisingly good build quality. So if someone's had a bad day I just let it go. I'd hate to work there too.

And the electric fly swatter has been a blast. The secret is, don't try to go all Jimmy Connors trying to hit them. Sneak it down slowly over them when they are at rest, and they will 7 times out of 10, fly right into it.

If they ship it to you then yes, it's based on the ship to location. If you buy in store it's based on the store's location. My Zip covers portions of 2 counties so when ordering online I often have to select the county also.

Guy about a mile up the road from us has the county line cutting right through his property. House is in our county, barn is in the county to the north. That can't be fun at tax time.

What cracks me up are people who blur out licence plate numbers in vehicle photos. I mean duh, you're driving around in public with your licence plate exposed to everyone anyway. It's not exactly a secret.
However stores that collect phone numbers often sell their phone lists so that generates even more nuisance calling. Normally I just hang up but sometimes if I have the time and lack something better to do I like to torture them a little bit by burning up their time with some cock and bull story about how I'm interested then cut them off just when they're are getting all hot and bothered thinking they have a live one on the line.

I live outside a small town that's in three counties and has an Interstate going through it. Fortunately, my property is all in one but the real headache for some of those folks used to be when they called 911. Before the system was unified, they had to describe in detail where they were. It was typical that four different LEOs showed up and sometimes eight. (county-1, county-2, county-3, city police, constable-1, constable-2, constable-3 and a state trooper.) There was enough police cars at a serious call to make a Smokey and The Bandit movie. But, it could be why there's little crime. :)
