Hard hat/crash helmet for tractoring? Anyone?

Leather 'buffalo hide' cowboy hat.

Usually seen with a dust mask stored on the crown.

Its just the thing for my frequent low-impact contacts with overhead orchard foilage.

Now that I have a ROPS, though, I won't be driving right through the tight spots. I'll have to back in from each side to mow this spot near the house.

This all reminds me of a cartoon I saw a while back...

OSHA Cowboy

I'm actually in the business of writing policies and rules for industrial settings. I've learned the value of the word "practical". That means I do what will protect people, capital, product, and process; but don't lose sight of the larger picture. And yes, comfort and convenience are a part of the larger picture for me.

There's a fine line between risk aversion and paranoia.

I usually wear a ball cap, ear muffs, and tinted safety glasses. I always wear long pants and I wear 8" boots with steel toes. I will usually wear leather gloves too. Most of that is for comfort, but I take comfort in knowing that I'm a little safer because of the protective equipment.

( Here in Texas in the summer a headgear would probably cause heat stroke. )

Here's the answer to all that:
Air conditioned helmet

Henro, you're a genius. That's the answer I needed! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If I wear a crash helmet (and maybe a Kevlar vest to cover my back), then I can leave the ROPS on when I'm working around trees. Wish you'd told me about this before I took the ROPS off.

As for the heat-stroke, I imagine a gallon or two of iced tea (in a hardened container capable of surviving blows from falling limbs) could qualify as a safety device. But we still have to come up with a safety device for the iced tea sodden operator who keeps stopping to relieve himself and who is at risk of stepping into a nest of fire ants or forgetting to set the parking brake.

The solution to safety devices that have become dangerous is more safety devices; not the mindless removal of the dangerous safety device. It's obvious now that I think about it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I usually am wearing the classic style ball cap on the tractor. Since I wear glasses, safety goggles plus ear muffs are really awkward so the goggles don't come on unless I'm running the weedeater. I've thought about a chainsaw helmet with earmuffs as a good combination, but haven't seen one with a long enough brim for sun protection. Something like Sherlock Holmes's two brimmed hat with a screen face shield and ear muffs would be ideal. Does anyone have a line on something like that?
