Hard hat/crash helmet for tractoring? Anyone?

That blue hard hat looks just like mine -- although mine has a few more marks and scratches on it.

I'm a little paranoid about the sun since I had (past tense) some relatives who developed skin cancer and I tend to burn and peel quite a bit. That's why I live in the woods and stay there as much as I can. The sun is actually physically uncomfortable for me to be in.

Crash helmets??? What about the neckbrace and 5pt harness like when I race?

On the tractor I use wraparound sunglasses- should be safety but haven't gotten them yet, the canopy on the ROPS, and either a Cabela's or an Arctic Cat ball cap.

I also often wear shorts, in the warm months, that is.

How many people fasten their seatbelts? ROPS do little unless you stay within the cage. I admit I don't wear it often, but insist others do if they run it.

I guess if working in the woods doing tree work I *may* use one, but probably not otherwise.

Guess after hitting the wall and other cars at high speeds in a racecar the tractor doesn't seem so bad... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That stiff leather cowboy hat I described early in this thread paid for itself again today.

Due to amateur remodels, the basement access under this old farmhouse is under a porch then under a girder that has maybe 50 inches vertical space. Just as you crouch under the girder you step down about 10 inches to the basement. Coming back out and stepping back up to the under-porch region, its all too easy to run your head into that unexpectedly low girder.

Today's encounter with the girder was a slight pressure around the hatband and at the crown as the stiff leather hat crushed and absorbed the impact. I barely felt what would have been a stop-and-cuss bump. I'm glad I was wearing it. It's a good match for the low impact hazards that are everywhere around here.

JC -- Being in western Pa. you most likely do not have a very flat piece of ground to work on. I have to guess you use your tractor differently than I use mine. I don't wear the seatbelt moving firewood to the house with the ROPS folded or doing things in the yard, but in the woods on the hills doing loader work where things get a little spooky, the ROPS is up and the belt is on.

I presume you're a smart enough guy to know when you need it and when you don't, so I guess I'm posting this for the rookies out there who figure it's just an OSHA thing and not something real macho men use. In the hills of extreme southeast Ohio, rollover tractor deaths are not an uncommon occurance.
