What kind of joint compound do you use with Hardibacker?

A fiberglass mesh tape is placed across the joint, then you use an acrylic-modified thinset and press it into the joint, covering the tape. You can do this at the same time as tilesetting, or it can be done ahead of time and allowed to set. If allowed to set before tiling, any bumps in this joint filling can be ground down with a rubbing stone. This acrylic modified thinset has special additives to keep the mortar slightly flexible after installation. You can purchase regular thinset mortar and use latex admixture instead of water, or you can purchase modified thinset such as Custom Building Products. Further instructions can be seen at the Hardibacker website.

Is Hardibacker a cement board product? If so, get the tape thats made for cement board, (not the regular stuff), then just use whatever mortar you are going to use to set your tile. I like versabond, it has a real fine grain and sets pretty fast.
