Hello All,

I have approximately 5 acres of newly graded land to prep for a grass seedbed. The question is what is my best path to a good lawn? Are the Harley rake and Rockhound similar or complementary? Rental rates are quite high. $375 per day for either.

Any and all thoughts appreciated!

The rock hound I like for small areas and the harley I like for big areas as you can just keep windrowing the rocks till you need to remove them with a loader. The rock hound needs a skid steer which compacts the soil quite a bit and the harley depending on size works well with a tractor loader combination.

Thanks Art!

Turns out that I can rent a Harley Rake for $566 per week without a delivery or Pick-up charge which sounds like the ticket.

As of right now I am leaning towards doing a fair amount of work with the Landscape rake getting the worst of it and then finishing with the Harley Rake, make sense?

Thanks,
Keith

I think that they work best in combination. Forced to choose, I'd go with the power rake for the majority of the work I have encountered.

The power rake will do more leveling and the landscape rake does a fine job of cleaning up the power rake's windrows. I, personally, would reverse what you said in the previous post.

I would watch the video on the woods power rake at there web site almost the same as the Harley .I have a Harley and its a good deal to windrow rocks and level dirt .If the soil is damp it works even better in my book .It covers alot of ground quick but you need to set it up right to the tractor to get optimal results.

You can do it with the harley rake all in one shot - its like a tiller, box blade and rake in one attachment....you will only need it for 2 days tops (for 5 acres) so you will save on the rental - rent it and be done with it would be my thoughts..

What size tractor are you using?

I have JD 4320. I would love to do it all in one step. My concern is that there re some larger rocks 12" or so and I didn't think the Harley Rake would handle them.

When you say that how it is set up on the tractor, could you clarify.

Thanks!

I just checked out rockhound's website. They have tractor mounted units in addition to skid steer. I like the idea of popping all those rocks in a basket. Too many time with a power rake, I would have a nice load of rocks working behind, only to hit a branch or a root, which lifts the rake enough to lose everything...They are both great machines, but seeing a rock hound in action (on my excavator's skid steer), I like it better...

12" rocks would be an issue for a york rake as well - use the bucket to remove them first

What about the larger rocks vs harley rake. That question caught my attention because I have many up to small basketball size.
