Thanks Art!

As of right now I am leaning towards doing a fair amount of work with the Landscape rake getting the worst of it and then finishing with the Harley Rake, make sense?

Thanks,
Keith

Keith! Slow down!!! The harley can level so much soil so quickly you'd soon after you started realize you've wasted your time and money with the landscape rake!
I perfer the double roll unit not the single but if you've never seen them work believe me it's not unusual to do a couple of acres an hour!

Brakes applied! :)

I will take your advise and move forward with the power rake. After the 2 most sunny months in history it is raining almost daily and has put a stop to our project...ARGH! We have only been waiting 3 years for a dry enough summer to complete the project.

I'll update when I move forward

The rock hound is nice when working with rocky soils, but it won't pickup anything large. Also if you have high green grass growing where your leveling it can wrap around the drive. It's not a problem and I used to actually use one with the intention of weeding out an area. Rock hound won't get all the green grass out but does a good job. If skilled you can grade with one just about as good as with a harley rake. I've only used them on skid steers so with the rock hound your going backwards while with the harley your going forward.

The Harley rake can make a bad grading job look great, but there's the extra work involved with getting rid of rocks. It also can do a great job clearing an area with weeds and grass that's still green. When done we used to then backgrade everything with the harley rake as it leaves a great finish for planting, but be careful when using one if it's going to rain. The harley rake really loosens up the soil and it can cause washouts.

If your good with a loader or skidsteer you can do just as good a job without one, but if you have no loader skills then the harley rake is for you, it does a good job leveling as well when it vindrows filling in low spots.

There's also a german made rake that I can't recall the name of that actually buries the rocks pretty deep. I saw a demo once in the 90's and it actually did a great job but where we lived there is so much rock, just a few inches down, that it would make buring it difficult.

Good luck with your choice. Also a word to the wise if using straw rent a straw blower or if you have kids have them do it.

Skip the straw and hydroseed. The cost difference, germination rate, washout resistance, weed free grass make it the choice if you can pay the extra.

rockhounds do a nice job. I have used a 6b for quite some time. Larger rocks, (softball size or larger) and rocks that are partially buried, stumps, etc., can present a problem for a rockhound. Depending on how much is there, you may spend more time than you want to dumping the rockhound on a large job. You can also bend teeth and twist the rails on a particularly tough job. The rockhound is a great cleaner but its rail system (at least the one I have which is about 5 years old) is not built "tough." I am careful what I pick with it or at least I turn down the speed so that the rails are sweeping much slower. Personally, I liked the suggestion about windrowing the material then using a rockhound to finish.

Harley rake all the way. Also, now is not the time to be planting grass due to the hot weather unless you have really good drainage and plan on watering almost all day for about two months. A fall planted lawn will not be burned up due to the heat and will have less weeds.

Great feedback, thanks to all! Any thoughts on grass seed types, fertilizers and where to buy. I shudder at the thought of what it is going to cost but buy does it loook great and I haven't even raked it yet!
