Gone,
I understand what you are saying about using whatever just to get through, but this discussion had turned from history towards something that is being used today.
There are many that read this board that are new to tractors, let's teach them safe ways to get along with the tractor.
Come Along winches, Bailey's sells a heavy cast iron winch. Hi Lift jacks can lift or pull like a winch. Asking a nieghbor for a pull and if they tell you no (never ever happened to me,) then ask another. Using the front end loader to lift the front end and the curl function to push yourself if possible.
The rescue squad stopped on the county road by my place a few years ago to make a last ditch effort to save a man that had a tractor flip over on him a couple miles up the road. It's a grim sight. I'm sure as a farmer you know at least a handful of fellows that have lost a part of an arm or a leg do to a farm equipment accident. If you see someone doing something unsafe, I think it's ok to say something.
Take care,
Boone
