Has anyone ever considered an emergency air shut off for your diesel tractor?

Well I have spent the afternoon researching the various types of valves and this is definitely and up and coming market. I don't know why an engine manufacture could not put this device on the manifold at the factory. From the few I could find a price for, they are not cheap by any means but it's like buying any kind of insurance you truly don't ever want to use it. As pointed out this device is mandatory around any kind of oil field or refinery environment and the more you learn about this the more likely one is to put them on your vehicle.

carry a heavy weight plastic bag. Something you can cover the air filter intake with. It's not rocket science, and the event of a run away is statistically insignificant. Your tractor is as likely to get hit by an errant goose.

On this small MT125 tractor I just watched a YouTube where a guy just put his hand over the intake hose and the engine died right away. Now the goose has me worried.

Now if the goose were to plug the intake of a run away compression ignition engine, Then we are talking FATE! ;-)

What about just turning off the ignition? With all the safety interlocks in place today, I'm sure one of them should help to prevent a run away. I understand that it pulls oil from somewhere else to keep running but....what are the chances? I would maybe make my own " gate valve" or butterfly set up, but would never spend $500-700 on a "what if" or "maybe" situation. I have been a firefighter / paramedic for 20 years and a professional contractor for 10. I am very safety minded but this is going extreme.

If a diesel is in a run-away condition, meaning that it is seeing an oil/fuel source from other than the intended injectors, you can take the key out, remove the battery, and cut the wire harness and the engine will continue along its run-away path until it has consumed all of the errant fuel source or until it mechanically self destructs. It will normally mechanically self destruct first. There is not ignition to cut on your diesel. Once you get the compression engine going, it runs until it is at a loss for a fuel source... very different from a gas engine.

A few years ago I rolled my L3240 on it's side and it took off running on it's own oil from the PCV valve line, nothing would shut the tractor off and I couldn't get the hood open to get to the air intake, I swore then but never did to install an emergency air kill, I just traded for a new L6060 cab and am now revisiting installing one.
Here is that old thread for anyone interested... http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...79496-rolled-my-3240-ran-till.html?highlight=

I can tell you no matter how "modern" a diesel engine they will run away (and fast) if they pick up natural gas in the right concentrations or some how like mine did start running on it's own crankcase oil, if it's rolled you are not going to be able to get to the intake to choke the air intake and it happens fast.

I wondered about how to shut off our generator in case of fire in the house or whatever. So, I put in a knife edge battery connector on one of the battery terminals (bought from internet). Opening the knife edge should shut off the fuel.

Of course, this won't do any good in the case of a runaway from other fuel source.
