Replacing the PTO Shaft is a good idea. Good time to change the fluid if its time also. If you don't need to change the fluid you can jack or run the rear wheels up on ramps or any support and let the fluid move forward. You might still have to drain some of the fluid but a lot less.
I'm not familiar with your model but most PTO Shafts come out by taking off the outer holder plate and sliding it out. Sometimes I have to slide on a PTO shaft off an implement and use it to pull the shaft from the rear end, makes it easier to hold onto while pulling or gives you something to pry against up close to the tractor.
