I'll tell you what I know has recently made a change in my business. I started advertising differently. Threw out the yellow page ads and started advertising online on every free site I could find...especially the ones that let you post pics.
This time last year I had about 2 jobs done in the seamless gutter business. We had some warm weather in March this year, so I've already done 12 jobs. 8 more still on the list to do along with several estimates to perform.
I've advertised in YellowBook for the last 2 seasons but I'm done with them when the current ad runs out. Way too much money for the return. Heck, Verizon even sold their Yellow Pages because they know it's soon to be a thing of the past.
I paid someone to design a website for me and have it hosted on GoDaddy. I can get in to edit it as needed. Not super expensive and gets results. The internet is definitely the way of future advertising. Ads in our local paper have gone absolutely nowhere.
In my business I also find that if you do one house in a neighborhood, you're likely to get more in the same area. Word of mouth is great advertising.
I've also gone to free sites like Manta and Yahoo and posted ads. Not sure about the results, but the price was right!
