Hi - When I go to buy a Yanmar (about 4 hours away) - I'm planning on taking a featherlite 3 horse trailer to haul it - I know it will fit in there as long as the Roll bar folds down.

My question is How do I secure it - I know I can block all the wheels - And I can put the bucket down and probably set a parking brake?

There's not much in the trailer to crank a strap to - There's a ring that that used to tie a horse and that is it.

Any ideas?

Another question - What do you recommend for Ramps - I spose they'll have ramps there and I can just back the trailer up to a hill when I get home?

Thanks

Hi there,
I don't know what you paid for the tractor, or the trailor, but I would guess something. So if you don't care about losing one, or both, or damaging the other, or both, I would find a way to strap it down to the deck of the trailor.

Chances are nothing will happen, but what if you are going 70mph and need to suddenly stand on the brakes, or take a sharp turn to avoid someone? You just never know.

Now with that said, what model are you trailoring, that might help some in getting advice to strap it down. Also, what kind of a FEL/ 3-pt hitch, etc.

Good luck.

Hi - Thanks for the feedback - I haven't bought the tractor yet.
However, I am anticipating a YM1500D or a YM2610D with a Koyker loader.

The dealership is a major one with several models in stock.

So, I guess I'll be looking at the floor and seeing if I can secure a hook or something.

Thanks

if you can manage to tie it down front and back so it cannot move either way, that would be best, then just take your time on the way home, drive likes its winter time basicly, nice easy stops ect. I automaticly go into towing mode when I tow my machines, longer stopping distances ect. Cheers Mike

Good advice and make sure you can use strap or chains to keep it down, i would avoid rope and/or hooks. Something that you can come-a-long strap with is best. Basically you don't want the unit bashing into a wall of your trailor, or pouding through the floor (these are two of the better scenarios....) . :)

There are so many reasons why what you're contemplating is dangerous....if the tractor is able to shift in any direction it could cause the trailer to sway into oncoming traffic. It could come through the front in an emergency stop...or even through the sides or rear in an emergency stop where the trailer fishtails or jackknifes. The tractor needs to be tightly bound to the floor of the trailer. Rent a trailer or pay for the haul. You put other people at risk as well as yourself when you go out on the road with a poorly secured load.

I think about this every time we ship...tractors and loose implements always have at least two chains on them, down to the sides of the trailer, attached implements at least one chain and sometimes a strap as well, depending on how things load. It would break my heart if we had a load come unsecured and harm someone...it would make it far worse if we hadn't fastened it properly.

I truly am not saying this to rag on you......it really is a potentially dangerous thing. Rent the trailer or let the dealer deliver when you make your selection. Or ask around and see if you can borrow a flatbed.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but if you get stopped by the DOT folks, part of the state police here, you will get a hefty fine, and pay to have someone else haul it home. In Michigan, it's chains, one per wheel. I think most states are similar. 2000 lbs of weight makes for a heck of an unguided missle. And the results could be tragic.

Thanks for all the replies - I wasn't trying to have a parade - I just figured people used their heavy duty horse trailers to haul other things besides horses - I just didn't know how they secured the load.

I'll figure something else out - I don't really want to buy a trailer and have more tires, bearings, registration to maintain - In the short run I'll see what dealer delivery costs

That's interesting, because our last conversation with an ODOT person indicated that USDOT and ODOT requirements on tractors of this size were two chains per tractor. I've seen haulers with new tractors chained with two per unit, and I'd be surprised if the factory distributors would intentionally violate USDOT.

We were also told that in the near future the cam-type binders will not be permitted...only the ones with threaded adjustments would be allowed. I prefer those as they allow more adjustment, but I can't imagine the threads being stronger than the components on a cam-type binder. We always lock those handles down with heavy nylon wire ties as well.

Well I just went out and looked at the horse trailer - And thought "There's got to be a way to use this thing to haul a tractor".

So, I called a trailer/Welding shop and explained the situation to the guy and he said, "Oh, ya, we solve that problem all the time - We weld in 4 D rings" He said it'd be about $160.

So that would help me in a couple ways - First it'd save me a lot of money and secondly it'd get my horse trailer up and down the road more often which would help it as I don't think it's good for the trailer to sit idle.

The only hard part he said is it'd be best if I pulled the rubber floor mats out each time I use it to haul the tractor as if I cut holes in the mats so the rings would sit flat then obviously manure would cause problems.

It sounds good to me - What do you think?
