Hauling planks w/ ROP and FEL?

If you have to use the tractor, set a ladder on the ground and tie rope or a chain to each end. Load up the material, drive the tractor over it, hook the chain to the loader and the 3pt hitch raise both to the level you want and drive off.

With these cheapo-trailers available, why not splurge for one, I know how expensive hardy-plank is.

But, based in some earlier replies I just had a thought! (Light Bulb)

Get one of those hand-trucks with pnuematic tires (you may own one?)
Then fasten an extension ladder to it. Then hook the extension ladder to your draw-bar/tow hitch. Instant skinny trailer!

You could even skip the Hand-truck, go buy 2 lawn mower wheels and a piece of metal rod to make an axle and hook it to the ladder.

Another method, 2 lawn mower wheels, 2 lag bolts, and a 2x10 piece of lumber, or similar. Hook to tractor and drive.

So here's the situation, I need to move 100 pieces of Hardi Plank siding that is 8 inches wide and 12 feet long, and weigh 20 lbs each, up a 300' gravel road that has a 20% grade. After trying it with some 1x4, it apprears that securing a 2x10 to the ROP and FEL will keep the siding from sagging, and small bundles of 8 pieces each will do the trick. I'm using a JD 870, 28hp, with a 420 FEL. Is there anything I'm not seeing?

Thanks
I've done it with 1x6 rough hemlock fence boards. Worked just fine and I moved them alot further with alot more weight on the back of the bucket against the loader arms. A 2x under the stack will provide the support easily for the 8 pieces. If you had a roll of shrink wrap to keep them from sliding off the 2x it would help. Just wrap the ends. With just 8 pieces you aren't in any real danger with the FEL kept low and a slow ground speed. The key is to play it safe and use your head, don't get to fast or careless. A tractor can roll over with an empty bucket if someone disregards common sense with tractor operation.

My JD FEL has a spot just aft of the bucket where the arms seem to be designed(?) to carry stuff like this. Use a 2x8' piece of plywood accross the loader arms to support the handi-plank. You might have to raise the FEL a little but it should still be lower than your hood. Roll the bucket forward and set the plywood on the cylinders and/or arms. Do it a few at a time (100lbs or so if it is on the cylinders) and take it easy.
