Tractor
Ford 3000 diesel
I start tractor & let off key the starter keeps turning over.
I have to disconnect battery to stop it.

G'day sounds like a bad solenoid to me what happens if you disconnect the small trigger wire on the solenoid as it is trying to keep starting?

Just a thought have you tried moving the key a little after it starts to see if maybe it's sticking in the switch? My 4-wheeler was doing the same thing last week and a shot of W-D40 in the switch fixed it. Something simple to try.

Ditto what Jon stated that probably the washer or lugs inside of solenoid are pitted causing washer to stick to lugs. In olden days one disassembled solenoid cap then flipped washer over and smoothed lugs with a file or sandpaper. In todays world just replace solenoid.

Is there a starter relay (external to the starter) that energizes the starter solenoid in that model? Its contacts could be fried, pitted and sticking too.

Ok I will try that. Low Voltage/amperage may have fried it.

Well the key switch is spring loaded but that could be the problem.
Tractor has been sittin for a while.

Bendix on the starter could be hanging up next time try tapping the starter and see if it wont kick out

If it is this style, the bendix needs to be cleaned and lubricated.

If it is this style, you can troubleshoot it with a voltmeter.

your haunted starter should be a lucas m-45 series if tractor sets in the elements a lot solenoid will have a likely chance of sticking where to contact is in the solenoid also low voltage will also cause it to stick low voltage in this situation will cause a welding effect and after a second the contact becomes welded to plunger and then sticking begins any rebuilder in your area can get these solenoids if my memory serves me well you are between waco and austin several goood builders in this area let me know i can get names and phone numbers for you
