For my tractor, Kubota M4900, they say( Kubota Tractor Corp.) to to set the front wheels at min. setting and rear wheels at max. wheel setting for FEL use. That still puts the front tire track's inside the rear tire track.
rutwald; it is not a clearance issue but a load issue. By the way I think they are very conservative on load issues.

I agree, it's probably a load issue and a stability issue. They think they have a load issue in the front but tell you to set the rear wide for stability.

For stability, I would want the front tires at the widest setting.

If you are looking for a new utility tractor in the size your talking about check out the MF 2605. 38 engine hp, 32 pto hp. The 2wd has adjustable front axle and adjustable rears. I would be suprised if other manufacturers didn't have something comparable. I wouldn't look for it or expect it on a compact. My CUT is a MF 1433v and it is a great lawn tractor, a handy loader tractor, and is great to use building fence. Not uses that I see needing to adjust the track for. I've owned and been around tractors for years now and I don't do any row crop type of work. Usually if I ever adjust a tractors wheels at all is when I first get it, after that it will probably stay to same until I sell it. Both of my other Massey's are still at the settings they had when they unloaded them from the truck with. I have actually been thinking about moving the rears out on the MF 596, but I had them loaded when I bought it and I just keep thinking they are too heavy to mess with. My take on it anyway.

The front axle pivots in the middle, where does a wide setting offer stability unless it reaches the end of the pivot and hits the axle pivot stop?

I don't think you'll find other 60 hp 4wd light utility (M7040 has 60 pto hp) tractors that can be adjusted to really wide tread settings. There are just some limits to how big you can make a tractor.

The spacer kit is for the front axle as you have to replace the inner axle shafts too. The narrow setting for loader use is so you don't split your axle in half.

I just took a peek at the book for the Case/IH 584 we had which was the same chassis up to the 784, it only had 4 front axle settings too with not much difference. The rears also only had 4 unless you paid extra for the axles and rims that you slide in and out. Never seen any with that option installed. The rims on ours where never changed during its 30 years, 8000 hours of plowing and loader work. No row crop though.

It was too low to be driving over plants anyways.

Good point! Maybe the futher from center pivot point, the sooner the axle with hit the pivot stop. I was just thinking if the bucket was loaded heavier on one side and raised all the way up, then the extra width would help.

All it does is lift the tire on the opposite rear. Both fronts stay firmly planted.
