You do more harm to a diesel (and attachments) by running them under powered. OPEN up the trottle and just back off.
Don't lug on your machine, let the engine (tractor) work and it'll love you a good long time.
As far as mowing grass... You'll get a better cut with the higher RPMs. The mower LIFTS the grass allowing for a better cut.
As far as the break in period. Mow a few passes at full trottle, then drive around the the yard at lower RPMs and pick up sticks, toys, dollar bills etc. Mow some more. Ribe back to the house get a cool beverage as the tractor idles for 5-10 minutes... mow some more....
Rinse, lather, repeat.
