How frustrating Kentucky weather can be.

Tuesday it was 60+ degrees and I walked to the mailbox with a t-shirt on.

This morning it is 18 and about a foot of snow on the ground.

Supposed to be 50 in four days.

Oh well, snug and warm with plenty in the fridge to eat.

Life goes on.

I am betting that all of those people stuck out there on I-65 were alot more frustrated than you were. Guess we got lucky in my neck of the woods, only had about six inches. Though the air temp was slowly dropping during the day, it looks like the ground had warmed up enough to melt it down some by this afternoon some.

I was watching the birds load up on seed and noticed some red winged blackbirds and grackles amongst the crowd. Either they know something we do not or perhaps they are as confused as the frogs I saw hopping across the road this past Tuesday morning.

The problem with snow and ice here is twofold. First we don't have enough bad weather for the state, county, etc. to invest in dedicated snow clearing equipment. So it may be two or three days before the snow plows get to back roads. The second problem is a typical Kentucky snow storm. it doesn't just snow. It nearly always starts out in the daytime with the temp in the upper thirties with rain. Then it freezes overnight and snows on top of the ice covered roads and driveways. I have spent most of the day today clearing our little road and, so far, fourteen driveways. Cannot go forward because the little Kioti just sits and spins. Have to go backwards where I can get some traction. I have fell off the tractor twice today, and fell twice walking around it to change blade angle. There is about a quarter to half inch thick layer of ice under the snow. To make matters worse the ground and pavement are just at freezing so when you break a slab of ice loose it floats on a thin layer of water. That is what I fell on today. Entire three foot square slabs of ice sliding out from under me.

I have learned to drive on this crap and have few problems. I know if I were in Canada with your three feet or more of snow I would have problems just as the Canadians who have worked here with me have had problems with our icy roads. You learn to cope.

Funniest thing is seeing a Brazilian trying to drive on ice.

Anyway, I am having a good time out playing on my little tractor and have made a lot of new friends in the neighborhood.

Pretty well everybody has problems on ice. The worst problems come from the people that think the brake pedal is their friend. It is not, it IS their worst enemy. Experience is the only teacher when it comes to driving on ice.

I can see where it would be a problem when people aren't used to ice and snow conditions.Because we have to deal with it every year the state, county and towns are prepared. Most home owners also prepare for winter and have a means of snow removal and a generator.
We are suppose to go in the +40's F next week, let the flooding begin.

Global Warming = screwed up weather swings. Almost like the weather is fighting to hold on to its old ways- swings one way, then back. Same here in Maine. 30 hour period : 40F to -6F.

I used to get by with 3+ cords of wood per winter for 10 or 15 years there...until last year. I did 4 cords. This winter it is 4.5 cords.

At the start of last winter I knew my snowblower for the paths was shot. My wife and I discussed not replacing it because we hadn't used it the year before- the snow melted fast. Not last year and this year! Easy to fall behind!
Pics below- 2 years ago Februay when snow would melt fast, last year's plowing to the barn in March. This year's February snow and more since this was taken!

What do you call a driver that brakes on ice?

A passenger.
