Tractor
8n
I have been trying to get my 8n working by replacing carb, new distributor, plugs etc. Will start, run for a few minutes then die. Started this morning. It immediately went to max rpm, backed off, began to sputter, ran rough then died. I am wondering if racing engine cold harmed internals of engine etc. I am at my wits end trying to get this tractor to run acceptably well.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Unhook the line at the carb and see if you have good fuel flow from the tank to the carb since you replaced the carb. I wouldn't think you hurt the engine this morning.

Ford 8N entered the market in 1938, so your tractor is nearly 80 years old.

Have you done a compression check so you have an idea of the general condition of the engine?

I doubt you damaged the engine this morning.

Disconnect fuel line then turn fuel on and drain into bucket awhile. Make sure fuel stream remains constant and strong. Sounds like you have a fuel delivery issue to carb.

Also make sure new carb is set to factory specs.

Close but not quite.
The 9N first came out in 1939.
The 2N in 1942.
The 8Ns came out in late 1947 but were considered a 48 model.

Do you still have fuel glass and filter screen? Check it because slow flow makes all the difference. Sounds like bowl is filling then not keeping up with use.

on some old carburetors there is a in line screen under the brass fuel inlet in the carburetor, take out he brass fitting and there may be a small cylindrical screen under it,

I agree with the others on this sounding like a fuel / carb issue.

Ignition is at least marginal or better if she is starting up and running briefly.
