I had also checked the KK website after ordering my tiller so I would know how much oil to add. No help there. The manual that came with the tiller has the same language as the website but has the quantities in bold at the end of each section about gear boxes.

I added the oil yesterday just before using the tiller for the first time. I added 40oz to the top gear box. Today I checked it and it's a little over half full but a long way from being totally full. If overfilling is such a problem I wonder why KK doesn't include an overflow plug like on the side gear box?

I have used the tiller for about 4 hours so far and it has performed great. I tilled up my old garden spot that hadn't been used for over 10 years and had horses running in it. After one pass I added a mountain of old manure that had been cleaned out of the barns last year and the tiller mixed it so well into the soil you can't see any of the manure on the top of the soil.

Tom you really have me wondering now, there's no way I added 40 ozs to mine, I cked the other day and its still at one of the "arms" I can see tho the hole but I haven't used it as much as you have, no rain here til the weekend and then only a maybe, I'm going to use mine next week and check it every hour or so. I'm in full agreement with you about a overflow plug on the gear box or a dipstick of some kind made into the cap, thats a idea! I'm going to use a tape measure to ck mine, at least that would give some idea of what half way is

Dixie,

No need to get elaborate with anything... I just used a long thin screwdriver as a dipstick when filling the top gearbox. When the oil level was halfway between the tip, and my thumb (placed on the screwdriver to mark the top of the hole), I stopped adding oil. Easy enough. I'd bet the problems happen when the gearbox is filled (topped off) or nearly so. My KK tiller has vented plugs on both gearboxes, which, should it have been overfilled to the point of overflowing, should allow the oil to escape without building up enough pressure to damage any seals.

The manual that came with my 60" King Kutter tiller lists that the top gear box takes 40oz and the side gear box takes 60oz.

Tom

Yep, that's what the manual says, and it doesn't take anything close to this. I dumped a 32oz bottle in the top, expecting to add 8oz more from another bottle, but it was already over half full after the first 320z. After seeing the warning about overfilling on another post, I'm thinking I better remove some.

For the size gear box, I dumped in 32oz. I then started dumping the 2nd 32oz bottle in, not expecting to need to slow down until it was close to empty. However, it almost immediately started to overflow. I'm guessing it took no more than an additional 8oz.

Overall I'd conclude it needed 20oz for the top gear box and 40oz for the side.

Your right xlr, I'm just worried about the overfilling thing with the KK's, I took the other one to a tractor dealer and had it "serviced" before I used it, then just cked it every so often, this one, I did myself and was/am concerned about overfilling or underfilling the top box. Mine as the vented caps but I'm not sure I trust them. seapeas post help my feelings a WHOLE lot!:)

How well do you guys think a rt will work on a field that has holes and ruts in it. I have a few fields that are very rough and trying to find a way to smooth them out. Will the rt break it up fine enough that I can then plant seed or will I have to box blade it after tilling?

Everytime you lift or drop the tiller, it will leave a high spot and a low spot. It will do the same everytime you change speeds. You could drag a harrow over it a couple times after tilling. A landscape rake after tilling would probably give the best results.
